A Most Unlucky Day
I had a streak of tough luck yesterday. Everything, it seemed to me, went wrong. And I simply couldn t understand why all the things happened to me in one single day.
In the morning, as luck would have it, my alarm clock didn t ring, and with an aching head I woke up half an hour later than usual. I was in such a hurry that, when making omelet, I got my fingers burnt and splashed the omelet all over the floor of the kitchen.
Having no time for my breakfast now, I rushed out of my house with an empty stomach and hurting fingers. I had intended to catch the 7:30 subway, but somehow I couldn t make it . I became very nervous at the bare thought of being late for my English class, because my teacher of English is very strict and demanding and he gets angry whenever any student is late for his class.
After getting off the 7:40 subway, I raced all the way from the station to my school, thinking it would be impossible for me to flag a taxi at this hour of the day. At the corner of the street near my school, I abruptly bumped into a man and, worse luck, broke my glasses I bought for 500 yuan last week. With hardly any time to receive or offer an apology, I just kept on running and running. At long last, I arrived at the school only to find, with great sadness mixed with some relief, that the school was empty and the classrooms were all locked. It was Saturday.
My ill luck showed no sign of coming to an end. When I returned home greatly frustrated, I found myself locked out. In my hurry I had forgotten to bring the key with me. Just my luck!

Video Games
Video games are becoming more and more popular in China in recent years. Almost everywhere you go, you will not fail to find people, both children and adults, keenly playing various kinds of video games at clubs, stores, or homes.
Why are video games so popular? Because they have many benefits. In the first place, video games are a kind of new, attractive and enjoyable entertainment. They will make us refreshed and energetic, and provide us with lots of fun and excitement. Secondly, video games can improve our ability to respond quickly, and help make us attentive and patient. When we play video games, our brains, muscles, eyes and hands must work together in order to win. Thirdly, when several people are playing are the same game, it helps to nurture team spirit in us, because we have to cooperate closely so as to play well. Last but not the least, video games stimulate children s interest in electronics and computer science.
Video games could do us harm without our knowing it. If proper attention is not paid to their side effects. First, violent video games such as killing and fighting are not appropriate for children to play, because they are no good to their healthy upgrowing. Second, some of us, especially school children, become addicted to video games and waste too much time playing them. Indulging in video games at the expense of our work or study not only harms our eyes and health, but also adversely affects our work or school performance. Worse still some people even go so far as to gamble in video games. Obviously only by doing away with the side effects of video games can we truly benefit from them.

Sports
Almost everybody likes sports. More and more people, men and women, the young and the old, are willing to take part in some kind of sports nowadays. Sports are no longer limited to a few professional sportsmen. It has, in fact, become the most popular form of recreation and relaxation that practically all can enjoy. This is because sports help to keep people fit, strong and healthy, and consequently help people to live a happier, fuller and longer life.
People in different places like different sports. For example, those people living in a hot climate or near rivers, lakes or the sea generally like to go swimming, while those living in a cold climate or near snow-capped mountain areas enjoy shining. The Mongolians, living on the prairie, are famous for their horse racing, and the Arabs, being in the desert, are noted for their camel riding. In fact, people almost everywhere have their own special types of sports.
As for me, my favorite kind of sports is fishing. Weather permitting, I always go to fish in the small river near my home on Sundays. In order to be a successful fisherman, I have to be patient and attentive, quick of eye and deft of hand. Apart from catching some fish and staying in shape, I have learned quite a lot of things through fishing.
