Al-Aqsa’s collection of (the collection of sth 意为…的藏品)Islamic
manuscripts is one of the most important in the world, according to Unesco.
Its newspaper archives also show the Palestinian perspective on the rising
numbers of Jewish settlers, the 1917 Balfour Declaration in support of a
Jewish state, British control between 1917 and 1948 and what Palestinians
call al-Naqba (“the catastrophe”): the 1948 conflict that passed most of the
area into Israeli control. Now they can browse its library from anywhere with
an internet connection. Although the mosque is administered by a Jordanian
trust, Palestinians can gain access to it only with a permit – or, during one of
the many outbreaks of violence, not at all.
So far, the EAP has given out £6m in 244 grants and has received images of a
vast compendium of medieval Jewish life known as the Cairo Genizah,
beautiful illuminated manuscripts by Ethiopian Christians, ethnographic
photographs of Soviet Siberia and scrolls that survived (这里指在战乱中留存
下来)the annihilation of the northern Chinese Tangut people in the 13th
century. There has been nothing, as yet, from Iraq. For much of the world, the
“British” in the project’s title contradicts the “post-custodial” ideal.
“If this is the memory of the world,” the EAP argues, “the world needs [to be
able] to access it.” Accordingly, all of the material is freely available,
and captioned (有说明文字的)in five languages. It’s easy to get carried
away: the UN estimates that only 40 per cent of the world’s population has
access to the internet, and, whatever the precautions, we have no way of
knowing how long these images will outlast (A outlast B，A 比 B 存在得更
久;描述人的话有 outlive)their physical counterparts. Yet, for the
foreseeable future, the EAP represents a new kind of archive – a utopian
monument to curiosity.

Criminology survey of those who would know best.

According to the institute, between 2001 and 2009 motor vehicle theft 机动车
辆盗窃 declined by 57 per cent, burglary 入门盗窃 declined by 49 per cent and
other theft fell by 32 per cent.

because definitions and counting rules changed.

To get to the bottom of the decline 降到最低, the AIC interviewed 994
police detainees 被拘留者 at Brisbane and Southport in Queensland,
Bankstown and Parramatta in New South Wales, Footscray in Victoria,
Adelaide in South Australia, East Perth in Western Australia and Darwin in
the Northern Territory in 2012.
All were asked: “Can you think of any reasons why property crime has
decreased over the last 10 years?”
Of the 470 who answered the question, the most frequent answer 最常见的答

to policing (20 per cent),increased affluence (11 per cent) and increased
imprisonment (10 per cent).
The AIC admitted the study had some shortcomings, such as the fact 36 per
cent ofrespondents were aged 15 or under at the start of the reference period,
so “might not reasonably be expected to be able to explain the reduction”.
Still, the AIC said its findings could offer an insight into 提供一些灼

“The fact that improvements in security were identified more often than any
other reason for the property crime drop may be significant given that there is
relatively little research that has explored this factor and even less that has
focused on Australia,” the AIC found.
“Similarly, little has been written about how changes in policing
have contributed to the property crime drop.
“This suggests that both of these factors warrant further investigation.”
But ultimately the AIC conceded the study may not be that conclusive.
“It is important to note that by focusing solely on 只关注 police detainees it is
unclear whether the reasons given for the property crime drop are any
different to those one would expect from a sample of the general population,”
the report stated.
“The assumption made here is that by being closer to offending behaviour,
police detainees would generate more plausible hypotheses, although this is
an assumption that may warrant further testing.”
