Children
Children in the United States are exposed to many influences other than that of their families.Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school.
Parents are concerned about the lack of quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them.Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they many become aggressive or insecure. Parents are also concerned at,out the commercials that their children see on television. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. And some parents feel that these shows should not have any commercials at all because young minds are not mature enough to deal with the claims made by advertisers.
Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents approve of The most famous of these is Sesame Street, which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet(字母)and numbers. It also flies to teach children useful things about the world in which they live.
Even though most parents and educators give Sesame Street and shows like it high marks for quality, some critics argue that all television, whether educational or not,is harmful to children. These critics feel that the habit of watching hours of television every day turns children into bored and passive(被动

English literature
Some of the notebooks George Washington kept as a young man are still in existence. They show that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior in society, and was reading English literature.
At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact, his formal education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete For unlike other young Virginian of that day,he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginian capital of Williamsburg. In terms of formal training then,Washington contrasts sharply with some other early American Presidents such as John Adams,Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years,Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress(国会),or on any Subject that had not to do with everyday, practical matters And because he never learned French and could not speak directly to the French leaders,he did not visit the country he admired SO much. Thus, unlike Jefferson and Adams,he never reached Europe
31.Why didnt Washington go to college?
A.His family could not afford it.
B A college education was rather uncommon in his time.
C.He didnt like the young Virginian gentlemen
D.The author doesnt give any reason.
32.Washington felt uncomfortable in Congress debates because he _____
A.1acked practice in public speaking
B.felt his education was not good enough
C.didnt like arguing and debating with people
D felt that debating was like intellectual training
33 The reason why Washington didnt visit France was probably that he _____
A.didnt really care about going
B.didnt know French 1eaders
C.couldnt communicate directly with the French leaders
D.was too busy to Navel
34 According to the author _____
A Washingtons lack of formal education placed him at a disadvantage in later life
B.Washington should have gone to France even though he could not speak French
C.Washington was not as good a president as Adams,Jefferson or Madison
D Washington was a model for all Virginian gentlemen
35.The main idea of the passage is that Washingtons education ____
A was of great variety, covering many Subjects
B was probably equal to those of most young gentlemen of his time
C.may seem poor by modern standards.but was good enough for his time
D was rather limited for a president

Mrs. Janes gave music lessons at a school. She had a good voice, enjoyed singing, except that some of her high tones sound like a gate that had forgotten to oil. Mrs. Janes knew her weakness well, and took every chance she could find to practise these high notes. As she lived in a small house, where she could not practise without disturbing the rest of the family, she usually went for long walks along the country roads whenever she had time and practised her high notes there. Whenever she heard a car or a person coming along the road, she stopped and waited until she could no longer be heard before she started practicing again, because she was a shy person. If the population of the earth goes on increasing at its present rate, there will eventually not be enough resources left to sustain life on the planet.By the middle of the 21st century,if present trends continue, we will have used up all the oil that drives our cars, for example.Even if scientists develop new ways of feeding the human race, the crowded conditions on earth will make it necessary for lus to look for open space somewhere else. But none of the other planets in our solar system are capable of supporting life at present. One possible solution to the problem, however, has recently been suggested by American scientist, Professor Carl Sagan.
Sagan believes that before the earths resources are compleetely exhausted it will be possible to change the atmophere of Venus and so create a new world almost as large as earth itself. The difficult is that Venus is much hotter than the earth and there is only a tiny amount of water there.
Sagan proposes that algae organisms that can live in extremely hot or cold atmospheres and at the same time produce oxygen, should be bred in condition similar to those on Venus. As soon as this has been done, the algae will be placed in small rockets. Spaceship will then fly to Venus and fire the rockets into the atmosphere .In a fairly short time, the alge will break down the carbon dioxide into oxygen and carbon.
When the algae have done theri work, the atmosphere will become cooler, but befor man can set foot on Venus it will be neccessary for the oxygen to produce rain. The surface of the planet will still be too hot for man to land on it but the rain will eventually fall and in a few years something like earth will be reproduced on Venus.
1.Inte long run, the most insoluble problem caused by population growth on earth will probably be the lack of ______.
a.food
b.oil
c.space
d.resources
2.Carl Sagan believes that Venus might be colonized from earth because _____
a.it might be possible to change its atmosphere b.its atmosphere is the same as the earths c.there is a good supply of water on Venus d.the days on Venus are long enough 3.On Venus there is a lot of ________. a.water
b.carbon dioxide
c.carbon monoxide
d.oxygen
4.Algae are plants that can____. a.live in very hot temperatures b.live in very cold temperatures c.manufacture oxygen
d.all of the above
5. Man can land on Venus only when_______. a.the algae have done their work b.the atmosphere becomes cooler c.thereis oxygen
d.it rains there
