1. 指示代词的形式与用法
指示代词分单数(this, that)和复数(these, those)两种形式，在句中可作主语、宾语、表语、定语等。在具体使用时注意：
(1) 用作主语和定语时，可指人或物;用作宾语和表语时，只指物。如在This is my father中，this 用作主语，指人，但是在Do you know this? 中，this用作宾语，此句只能理解为“你知道这个情况吗?”不能理解为“你认识这个人吗?”
(2) that和those可作定语从句的先行词，但this和 these通常不能。另外，在作先行词时，those可指人，但 that 不可以。如：
What is that which you have just put into the plastic cup? 你刚才放在塑料杯里的是什么东西?
Those who have not bought insurance are now regretting. 那些没有买保险的人现在后悔了。
2. this 与 that用法区别
当要回指上文提到的事情时，可用this 或 that，但是若要指下文叙述的事情，通常要用 this。如：
He was late again, and this [that] was what surprised me most. 他又迟到了，这是最令我吃惊的.。
We all want to know this: Is it big enough? 我们大家想要知道的是：它够大吗?
注：在打电话时，通常用 this 指自己，用that指对方。
3. that 和 those 用于表替代
代词that 和 those 可用于替代前面提到过的名词，以避免重复。如：
The population of Japan doubles that of Canada. 日本的人口是加拿大的两倍。(that=the population)
His tastes and habits coincide with those of his wife. 他的品味和习惯与他的妻子恰巧一样。(those = the tastes and habits)
4. this 与 that 用作副词
this 和that 除用作代词外，有时可用作副词，用以修饰其他形容词或副词，其意相当于so，表示“这么”、“那么”。如：
We can’t get there this (that) early. 我们不能到得这么(那么)早。
Is he always this (that) busy? 他总这么(那么)忙吗?
