The case for college has been accepted without question for more than a generation. All high school graduates ought to go, says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence, because college will help them earn more money, become "better" people, and learn to be more responsible citizens than those who don" t go.

But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending, those who don' t fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious. College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students interfere with each other' s experiments and write false letters of recommendation in the intense competition for admission to graduate school. Others find no stimulation in their studies, and drop out--often encouraged by college administrators.

Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves--they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. But that' s a condemnation of the students as a whole, and doesn' t explain all campus unhappiness. Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right.

Some adventuresome educators and campus watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school. We may have been looking at all those surveys and statistics upside down, it seems, and through the rosy glow of our own remembered college experiences. Perhaps college doesn' t make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, or quick to learn things--maybe it' s just the other way around, and intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, quick-learning people are merely the ones who have been attracted to college in the t-n'st place. And perhaps all those successful college graduates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not.

Since the dawn of human ingenuity, people have devised ever more cunning tools to cope with work that is dangerous, boring, burdensome, or just plain nasty. That compulsion has resulted in robotics---the science of conferring various human capabilities on machines. As a result, the modern world is increasingly populated by intelligent gizmos whose presence we barely notice but whose universal existence has removed much human labor.

But if robots are to reach the next stage of laborsaving utility, they will have to operate with less human supervision and be able to make at least a few decisions for themselves--goals that pose a real challenge. " While we know how to tell a robot to handle a specific error," says Dave La very, manager of a robotics program at NASA, "we can' t yet give a robot enough ' common sense' to reliably interact with a dynamic world. "

What researchers found, in attempting to model thought, is that the human brains roughly one hundred billion nerve cells are much more talented--and human perception far more complicated than previous imagined. They have built robots that can recognize the error of a machine panel by a fraction of a millimeter in a controlled factory environment. But the human mind can glimpse a rapidly changing scene and immediately disregard the 98 percent that is irrelevant, instantaneously focusing on the monkey at the side of a winding forest road or the single suspicious face in a big crowd. The most advanced computer systems on Earth can' t approach that kind of ability, and euro scientists still don' t know quite how we do it.
