Dear x,

As a double major in Anthropology and Psychology at the University of RhodeIsland, I have gained a strong background in both fields. My background isespecially strong in physical anthropology, my primary field of interest.Physical anthropology consumes my life; I do not study it because I find itsomewhat interesting but because I am devoted to it; I want to make it my life.In addition to maintaining a high GPA throughout my college career, and makingthe Dean's list several times, I have also worked hard as a supervisor at BrooksPharmacy for the past five years. Working my own way through college not onlydemonstrates my determination to gaining a high quality education and theseriousness with which I treat academics, but also attests to my leadershipability, maturity, and responsibility, both as a supervisor and as a student atthe University of Rhode Island.

My primary goal in applying to your graduate program is to prepare myself fora career in forensic anthropology. Interested in furthering the current body ofresearch and in improving techniques used in the identification of humanremains, I am very committed to pursuing forensic anthropology and believe yourgraduate program in anthropology will provide me with an excellent foundation inthe area of physical and forensic anthropology. With a Master's degree andPh.D., I will be well prepared to lead a very promising career. While I have nodoubt that the program will push me to my limits, I am confident that I can facethe rigorous challenges posed by graduate study and thrive under the demandingenvironment that advanced studies entail.

From my transcripts, you will see that not only am I a well-balanced student,I actually thrive in rigorous, upper level courses, courses akin tograduate-level courses. Armed with the confidence that I can excel at difficultcourses, I believe I can achieve the highest level of success and satisfactionby taking the most demanding graduate program available.

In addition to my ability to excel in the classroom, I have demonstrated aproficiency in all aspects of conducting research. Research has become afundamental part of my college career, and I hope it will become the primarycomponent of my future. As a sophomore at the University of Rhode Island, Idesigned a research project entitled "Grooming and Affiliative Behavior in ThreeSpecies of Non-Human Primates" under the guidance of Dr. Su Boatright Horowitzin the Psychology Department at URI. My research proposal gained approval fromthe Institutional Care and Use Committee at URI and at the Roger William Parkand Zoo where the three species of non-human primates (Gibbons, Sakis, andLemurs) included in my study are kept. In addition to writing a successfulresearch proposal, I also wrote and received a small funds grant from theUniversity of Rhode Island in order to conduct my research. By being intimatelyinvolved in every aspect of research, from proposal and grant writing to datacollection and analysis, I have learned what it takes to be a researcher, butmore than that, I have learned how fulfilling and interesting research canbe.

In the spring of 20xx, I will be presenting my results at a posterpresentation at the University of Rhode Island, and am planning to eventuallypublish my findings. Not only has this experience shown me that I am capable ofexcelling in conducting research, but it has also allowed me to develop a lovefor the hands on learning that is so crucial to successful research. In my finalsemester at URI, I will be participating in an ongoing research projectconcerning brain function and attention span under the direction of Dr. DominicValentino, a professor in the psychology department at URI. This project willundoubtedly further advance my academic skills and reinforce my passion forresearch.

Physical anthropology is more than just my primary area of education; it hasalso become my hobby and lifestyle. The questions posed and answered via thestudy of physical anthropology have fascinated me for a very long time and havestimulated me to ask and seek to answer further questions. With my mind set onthe very specific goal of preparing myself as excellently as possible for afuture in the field of forensic anthropology, I am fully confident that, withthe ability to pursue my education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Iwill not only be able to fulfill my dream, but to contribute substantially tothe university as well.

Dear x,

To me, art is like a mystery which is to be solved. I see anartwork as the concentration of an idea or concept into a physical entity. Theidea or concept is rarely evident through just looking at piece; it requiresanalysis or scrutiny to interpret it. This is why I am rarely happy with a pieceof art unless I can see some meaning behind it. Whether it is my own or anotherperson’s, I feel a great satisfaction when I discover an underlying theme ormessage; deliberate or not. It is like poring over a cryptic riddle or a puzzlefor time until all at once it falls into place.

Perhaps it is my obsession with problem-inducing things: crypticcrosswords, chess, Rubik’s cubes, poker, cribbage and scrabble that have inducedthis vision of art. It is the same either way. If I am looking at a Mark Rothkopainting, Rothko has set the puzzle to be deciphered and I am attempting tosolve it, even if the answer is as simple as, ‘a perfect combination of colour’.If I create an artwork, it will have hidden parameters evident only by scrutiny. It may be easy to interpret or it may be difficult, it doesn’t matter. I don’tmind if people don’t interpret it the way I intended; only that it makes sensein their own minds and that it gives them that same sense of satisfaction that Iget when I solve a puzzle. You could say that that is the ultimate motivationfor the art that I produce.

This theme has also played a strong role in the work that I have been doingover the past year in my Art Foundation course. In the last ’self’-orientatedproject I focussed on my fascination with playing cards and chess combined withthe physical aspects of my life. This has developed into my current project thatconcentrates on aspects of chance (chess, playing cards) combined, symbolically, with aspects of purpose (religion, gods, fate, strategy) through many differentmediums, including customised board games and sculptures. I am intrigued withhidden meanings, so I am looking at artists such as Joseph Beuys and Leonardo DaVinci who are known to use a lot of symbolism in their work.

My current work has developed from many of the foundation course projects Ihave done since the beginning of the year. I feel that this year has been asignificant indication of what path I want to follow in the future. I initiallyenrolled with the mindset of trying it out and deciding what to do later on inthe year. I have worked hard at keeping up with work and have enjoyed being ableto develop my own ideas creatively over the last two terms. The foundationcourse has already taught me how to be broad-minded about what art can be, andthe learning process has been somewhat enlightening. Ultimately I have enjoyedthe course; whether it is experimenting with interesting ideas in my own space, sharing ideas with my peers about what we are doing or constructing sculpturesin the workshops. Upon having wandered around the degree student’s areas a fewtimes just to look at the work that is being produced I feel a connection towhat they are doing and what I am currently learning about and it makes me wantto go further with my work. This is why I wish to continue on at the degreecourse. I believe it will challenge me and help me to evolve the art that I doto an even further level.

Since October 2007, I have had a Saturday job working as an assistant in abutcher’s. This job requires me to make deliveries, clean the shop, servecustomers, prepare meat and I often help out at the hog roast functions that theshop hires out. I have done my best to work hard at this, as it is the onlyproper job I have had apart from a paper round. Alongside attending thefoundation course I feel that it has made me a much more organised and confidentperson in terms of arranging my life. I have definitely enjoyed working there asmuch as I have worked hard at it. To resound the work I have done I have beenoffered more work at the shop and at supervising hog roasts during thesummer.

Dear teacher

  Hello!

My name is Yu, I'm 18 years old xx Senior three.

At 20xx I took part in the national physics competition of middle school students in autumn of, and won the second prize. So I got to participate xx I'm not qualified. For this, I feel very surprised and honored. After consideration and weighing, I chose your university as my goal. Although facing the unknown results, I was uneasy, but I decided to give it a try.

I am a child through books to accept the Confucian and Taoist culture, I treat people with courtesy, also can be honest and trustworthy, enthusiastic collective. It's just that sometimes people become estranged because of too much etiquette. Sometimes it lacks the courage to stand up. I'm trying to change myself.

In my study, I have been able to rank in the top ten of the class, and my grades are superior in the whole school. However, in front of the college entrance examination, this is not an ideal result. I'm good at science - sometimes I'm the first in my class, but I'm not good at liberal arts. I like to study problems and problems, and I like to ponder things quietly. I am evaluated as "a student who thinks differently from others" by the teacher. I dare not say whether I am excellent or not, but I enjoy the feeling of being different.

In the extracurricular, I have a wide range of interests, in independent research has also been more proud of my achievements. I once spent a year in my spare time to make a game. The work was praised for its ingenuity and creativity, but its popularity was low due to the lack of plot. During the year, the production process was intermittent, and the program idea made me racking my brain, constantly carrying on the psychological struggle between playing games and doing projects. Collect materials, algorithms, audio clips... Every step is very attentive. Many firsts have given me a lot of experience. Then, when it is finally completed, the joy is irreplaceable. I learned one very important thing, that is persistence.

Another part-time experience that benefited me a lot was music score. Because I like a piece of TV music very much, I try to write it as a piano score. I have cet-5 certificate of amateur electronic organ, but it is still not easy. After the bottleneck, I turned to the Internet. However, how many people will help strangers to do this kind of trouble? The answer is zero. So I decided to do it by myself. I didn't expect that after my own efforts, I really wrote it! From this, I learned another important thing, that is, to be self reliant. No one can rely on you. It is meaningful to overcome difficulties by ourselves.

Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that although I can only achieve the upper secondary school grades in the current, I will certainly be able to do my best when I go to the university to study my favorite subjects and yearn for them. At that time, I would choose my own career and devote myself to it. Believe me to do better - and I hope you can believe it.

I think my most important advantage is that I have time - just like everyone else. I still have the opportunity to change myself and complete myself in my four years of University. To fight for it, that's what I'm doing now. I hope your school can give me a chance to realize myself. Looking forward to your approval!

  Sincerely

  Salute!

Dear teacher

  Hello!

Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position. Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannot catch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning field in China, so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management in England.

The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modern entrepreneurs. As a young girl, it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. My mother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simple calculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I, also, would someday be able to enter the realm of business.

With the time of growing up, I preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered. Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and my knowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasing rapidly.

As a high school student in China, I had to concentrate on the College Entrance Examination (CEE), even so, books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June, 20xx, I was so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in the department of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be a failure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms, I realized that I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At that moment, I lost my direction and objectives.

My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some books about management by Peter F.Drucker.

I began to notice something interesting: Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell more than others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties?

With the questions in my mind, I started to read many relevant books. I was lucky to read the book “Jack: Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch, in Which John A. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for a company.

When I was a junior, I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. I should manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shop even made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the run the shop.

From this, my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business has been greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I was doing. By December, 20xx, I had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge, I strived to gain more practical work experience in some big companies.

Fortunately, as a senior, I began by conducting an internship in the Architecture Company in Zhejiang Province.

Over six months, I worked as an assistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the different departments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadened my perspective of management conditions and business performance in different industries. The experience showed me that management is much more important than that of I thought in big companies. After graduation, I continued my work in this company.

In May, 20, the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school. Through in-depth discussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me to pursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual ability and the brand new ideas I mentioned.

During the short period of training, I realized that pursuing a higher degree in management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellence in management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challenging environment, I can build the required foundation of knowledge related to management to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission will be my first step of success. With this in mind, I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.

 Yours sincerely,

  Hello!

I have always been interested in Forensic Science & Biological Scienceand learning how different techniques and methods are used for solving crimes. In particular how the principles of bioinformatics are used in detection andidentification of microbes; how it is used in Forensic Science for detectingbiocrime attacks and how to identify and examine skeletal remains of victimsafter long period of time. I have found learning about Genetic fingerprintingand how it is used for identifying a suspect and solving paternity casesparticularly relevant because it is applicable to real situations. I am studyinga BTEC National Diploma in Forensic Science. I have a naturally inquisitive mindand like to acquire new knowledge, especially in Forensic Entomology, ForensicToxicology and Criminal Law. I also enjoy the laboratory work which consists ofusing laboratory techniques such as fractional distillation, gas, liquid andthin-layer chromatography. From the practical part of the course I have gainedmany analytical and problem solving skills and my great interest is analysingqualitative and quantitative data. During my course I have advanced on some verybroad set of skills, including numeracy, teamwork, time management, making oralpresentations, planning and organising my work. In my personal opinion teamworkunderpins laboratory work.

I gained work experience in August 20xx. I went for a holiday to Sri Lankaand I did volunteering work at the Coconut Research Institute. This is a hugescientific research institute where they experiment with the growth andcultivation of coconut palms. This provided me with the opportunity to observeand work shadow. Visiting the Institute was very informative as it gave me aninsight in to how scientists work in a scientific laboratory. This made itpossible for me to use some advanced laboratory equipments.

I had a part time job at the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham. I havegained experience in assisting a Marine Biologist to test and clean the watersof the aquarium tanks. One of my duties was to look after children between 1-5years old in the children's play area. This experience allowed me to develop mycommunication and observational skills which are very vital for the role as aForensic Scientist. I will be needed to give evidence in court individually aswell as working in a team.

My main interest is reading factual books. I particularly enjoyed:Microbial Forensics by Roger G. Breeze, Forensic and Criminal Psychology byDennis Howitt and Fundamentals of Forensic Science by Academic Press. Fromreading books such as Microbial Forensics I have understood and learned valuableinformation on how Forensic Science is used for solving bioterrorism andbiocrime attacks. I also read science magazines and journals like the BiologicalScience Review magazine and New Scientist Magazine.

I undertook extra curriculum activity which enabled me to achieve an awardfor the best effort in fundraising with an organisation called Hart inBirmingham. I helped them raise money for the Tsunami victims in Sri Lanka. I'malso helping the Marine Conservation Society by adopting a green turtle.Previously in my school I achieved a first aid certificate from the Red Cross inBirmingham along with a certificate from Dr. Patricia Houlston for gettinginvolved in a lecture about experiencing the inner city life of a GP inBirmingham. This lecture was very useful because I learnt how professionals workand communicate in a clinical working environment. I was also involved in a role- play by pretending to be GP and communicating with a patient and doing thisenhanced my communication skills. I'm a forward thinking and determined person.I plan to obtain high level degree in order to continue to an MSc degree.

Dear x,

For as long as I can remember it has been my fondest dream and my furthestgoal to attend college. From the beginning, I knew it would be an uphill climbto gain admission into a prestigious university. I have worked long and hard toget good grades in order for me to attend a university. I was finally admittedto the University of California Riverside. If I graduate from college I will bethe first in my family. But, lately I have realized that I cannot reach mydreams alone; I would need financial assistance. My father was laid off from hisjob four months ago and my mother is unemployed. We're barely able to make ourhousing payments, utility and insurance bills. And if that weren't enough schooltuition has dramatically gone up. I also have two other brothers who have toattend a university, but my family can't afford it. I need assistancefinancially. By being a recipient of a scholarship from Riverside CommunityCollege I will be able to alleviate this need, and possibly be the first memberin my family to graduate from college

Through much research and self-analysis I have decided that I would pursuea career in International Business. This field offers competitive salary tocollege grads, gives a chance to travel to different parts of the world, and isalso a competitive field in today's continually globalizing economy, which hascaused a demand for those with international expertise. After receiving myBachelor's degree in Business Administration at the University of CaliforniaRiverside, I plan to continue my education until I receive a Masters andDoctorate degree in International Marketing

I decided that a career in International Business is for me because I havetraveled to many foreign countries throughout my life and have excelled inforeign languages. I have a solid background in the English and Spanishlanguages and I also know a little of Italian

Being Bolivian and living in the United States has given me an interesting, well rounded outlook on the world. I am a blend of two opposing lifestyles, andmy thoughts, ideas, and actions reflect this blend. I have a thorough knowledgeof the American and Spanish cultural lifestyles which I believe would be of anadvantage to me when I pursue a career in international marketing. I am also inthe process of gaining business knowledge and experience by working and runningmy parent's family shoe store. I take care of the bookkeeping, retail sales, andthe ordering and purchasing of merchandise. But with the recent economicdownturn it has been very difficult to maintain the business in a profit gain.Although our business is not doing well it is giving me a chance to see if I amcapable of handling a business during a challenging situation by using apowerful business strategy: consumer focused marketing

Therefore, my ultimate career aspiration is to become a successfulexecutive in an international company playing a leadership role in customerfocused marketing. As an international businesswoman I would be employed by aspecific company, one in which would be in the need for an individual withforeign language and business skills. Chances are I would frequently travelbetween countries, and conduct business with officials of the foreign country inwhich we are doing business

I would need to possess a well-rounded business knowledge that includesexpertise in finance, marketing, and personnel management. I hope to gain thisknowledge by studying at a University. Also, while still attending classes atthe University, I hope to study abroad for a semester, in the process immersingmyself in another culture, and deepening my personal and academic understandingof International Business

After studying abroad and receiving my degree, I would like to volunteer towork for a non-profit organization. Then after gaining business knowledge andmost importantly business experience, I will enter the exciting internationalcorporate world. In the long-run, I envision for myself a career straddling thehighest levels of international business as a corporate leader. I am confidentthat my determination, perseverance and tenacity will lead me to the successfulachievement of this personal vision.

  Yours sincerely,
