Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary?

A test of spoken English will be included as an optional component of the College English Test (CET).

A test of spoken English will be included as an optional (component of the College English Test (CET). Some people contend that it is absolutely necessary to hold a test of spoken English in China because we have been told many times that a Chinese student who has been learning English for years cannot communicate with a native English speaker. Sometimes even those top students who excel at grammar and writing skills find their English inadequate to express their thoughts freely when speaking. A test of spoken English will bring the importance of speaking English to the awareness of the college students, and thus help them with their communicating skills.

On the other hand, there are also people who maintain that good reading and writing skills would be enough for the average English learners. College students are already under considerable pressure from their coursework. Another required test will only add to their burden. Also, some students may take the shortcut and only practice the questions according to the fixed format of the test, which will not actually improve their spoken English.

I believe that a test of spoken English will do more good than harm. Since China will continue its policy of opening and reform, the ability to speak fluent English is a must for anyone who wants to surpass others in a highly competitive society. Whether I take the test or not, I shall make all efforts to practice my spoken English in the rest years in college.

The Craze of Pursuing Graduate Studies 考研热

Each year, millions of Chinese college students sit for qualifying examinations for graduate studies, primarily in Master’s programs. Students prepare for those examinations either through years of arduous self-education or by spending large sums of money attending local training schools. The publishing of examinations-related study materials and the training programs offered, both online and offline, have combined to form a sizable industry.

An alarming fact about this craze is that most students pursue graduate studies not out of their voluntary will. Faced with the harsh reality in the employment market, which is forever looking for graduates with higher degrees, many college graduates find going to graduate schools is a good way to avoid unemployment and to enhance one’s competitiveness in future job hunting.

However, without that voluntary initiative, most students who do enter graduate schools are not motivated. For them, the only thing that ultimately counts is the degree or the diploma which they expect could give them an upper hand against other job hunters. As to the actual substance of their graduate studies, it’s not a big deal for them, as long as it leads to that degree or diploma. It is really pathetic to see that students undertake graduate studies with an ulterior motive—not for the sake of loving what they study, but for the sake of merely landing a job, which in many cases might be unrelated to what they have studied.

The chill truth is that students soon find their anticipations are a mere dream. As so many undergraduates proceed onto graduate studies, the employment situation remains as severe as ever. Instead of bringing about apparent competitive edges, two or three years of additional academic training is simply a waste of time and energy. They need to reflect on this craze and would have been better off distinguishing themselves with outstanding knowledge and skills when they were undergraduates.

  1. to sit for examinations: 就相当于to take part in examinations

  4. Master’s program:硕士学位课程;“本科学位课程”是undergraduate program或Bachelor’s program; “博士学位课程”是 Ph.D. program 或 doctoral program;

  5. to prepare for examinations: 备考

  6. either through …or by …: 要么是通过…, 要么是凭借…

  7. years of arduous self-education: 数年的艰苦自学; arduous:艰难卓绝的; self-education的另一个说法是self-study;

  8. to spend large sums of money attending local training schools: spend time or money (on) doing something; 另外,在large sums of money这个表达方式中,虽然money是不可数的,但作为量词的sum是可数的,要用复数,谓语动词也相应要用复数。类似的例子有amount, 如large amounts of energy, 其用法与large sums of money相同。

Prepare for the Final Exam

It s almost the end of this term, so I have to prepare for the final exam. Chinese, math and English are the three subjects. I am not so good at math, so I must work hard. Every night, I spend little time on watching TV. Luckily, I don t have much homework and I have enough time to review. I hope I can do a good job in the exam.

School Report

When I go to school, I will have a test once a month, I am so afraid to tell my mother the school report, if I do well, my mother is happy, but if I am not doing well, I let my mother down. The school report is so horrible, I think the parents should treat it right, whether the child do well, they should encourage the kids.

Badly Performed Students Should Fail the test

According to the authoritative report, the number of college student is growth, while the quality is not as good as before. In the meantime, whether students perform badly should fail the course have spoken much debate? Some assert that school should not be so desperate, just turning a blind eye to their behavior, while others convinces that student should take their responsibility for their performance. Personally, I’min favor of second one.

Convince arguments can be made that if school let all students pass the course, it will increase their laziness. To start with, students will not worry about being registered by disciplinary inspector when they get up late. Therefore some of them will play computer games very late until midnight. Some students even don’t attend the class and finish assignments. They hold a view on mind: even they get a low score on final exam, they still can pass it. Besides, some students do somepart-time jobs or join in student union but they can’t be the excuses for escaping learning. Finally, if teachers get all students through the exam, it must be unfair to struggling students and damage school's reputation.

In summary, I would concede that students who perform badly should be fail, as it makes students more lazy, damage school's reputation and unfair to the diligent students.

My View on Examinations

We live in a world full of competition. And the examination is one of the tools to exam whether we meet the standard or not. If we want to enter the key university, we have to get high marks on the College Entrance Exam;if we want to have a good job, we will go through a series of interviews and tests; If we want to drive a car, we have to pass the driving test. Some people complain that there are too many exams in our lives, and these exams cannot truly or fully reflect a person’s ability. Unfortunately, our fate and future are depending on these exams. We cannot avoid them.

It’s true that the examinations can only test what we remember instead of what we know. A student with a good memory may find it very easy to get high marks before the examinations. All he needs to do is to remember the knowledge from the textbooks. In this situation, it’s quite unfair to evaluate the students only through exams. What’s more, some unexpected accidents may happen to the students such as a high fever or a sudden headache; this will affect the final marks. Since no one can performs stable all the time.

Sometimes, luck plays a vital role in the examinations. The student may guess an answer right although he doesn’t work hard on the course. If the student has a good handwriting, he may get higher marks than others. There are many subjective factors that may affect the outcome of the exams.

In a word, it’s not enough to use exams to evaluate the students. If the schools want to assess the students, they should use different ways. Only in this way, the result may be fair.
