W:Good evening.Which evening course would you like to enroll for?

M:I’ve been thinking about taking this course in Modem Guitar.are there any vacancies?

W:Well, there are…nine, ten, eleven enrollments so far on the list.So that means we’ve got fourplaces left. The class seems to be filling up much more quickly this year. You’ll find the details in thisbrochure.

M:Will it be starting next week?

W:We hope so.It’s due to begin on Tuesday,7 P.m to 9 P.rn.Shall I put you down? We’ll havestopped taking any more names by this evening,so if you…

M:Can you tell me where the course is held?

W:Oh,it’s in the Main Building, second floor, room 219,immediately opposite the library. You can’tmiss it.There are posters of pop groups all over the walls.

M:I see.And if I do enroll。what will I need for the first lesson?

W:Well,you’11 need a guitar of course. That’s absolutely essential.You’11 also have to have a studenttutoring book. There are copies on sale in the book rooln. We get them quite a bit cheaper from an educational supplier so you can buy one at a bargain price!

M:How much is this all going to cost?

w:Er…the course fee is£12.60 a term, That’s twelve weeks. The student book costs£1.50 and ifyou don’t actually own a guitar presumably you’II have to buy or borrow one.You can get a second-hand one for around£20to£50 for a fairly reliable instrument, depending on the sound quality and general eondi tion.

  Part B

W:Dr Lee,today, millions of us are now addicted to chat rooms,e-mail and just plain web surfing.

M:Yes,it’s no secret that we’re into computers. And why not? On the Intemet,we can catch up on news, plan vacations, pay bills and make friends. But for some, once they type their way onto the Intemet, they just can’t stop.

W:Do you think wh0’s getting hooked?

M:Internet addiction can happen to anyone who’s lonely. It includes two surprising groups:college students and homemakers.

  W:How does that happen?

M:Away from their families, homesick and overwhelmed, many college students seek connections on the computer. And homemakers are prone to addiction too,if they’re shy.Face-to-face talking can createanxiety. The chat room eliminates all that.

W:But the more on-line connections vulnerable people make.the more they may neglect the connections they hold dear in real life.

M:Yes.Apart from that,Intemet also does harm to them.In a recent study,51 percent of men and 42Dercent of、Women named the Internet as one of the reasons they’re not getting enough sleep! And 68Dercent of Internet addicts surveyed said their on-line usage was destroying their relationships.TheDerson will retire to the computer at night instead of the bedroom, and form cyberspace relationship with strangers instead of communicating with a spouse.

W:It does make us worry.Do you have any suggestion for us?

M:Well, there are steps to take to make sure your family doesn’t get hooked, for example, you can put the computer in a common area like a living room where you can’t spend hour after uninterrupted hour online. You can use a timer to limit on-line time. But I think the best way is to join a club.Anyone with balance and face-to-face contact with others isn’t likely to get hooked.

  Part C

Questions 11—13 are based on a piece of news about college admission in the USA.You now have 15 seconds to read Questions 11—13.

Some of America’s best universities have accepted an unusually low percentage of students for admission this fall.

For example, the Wall Street Journal reported that Stanford University had a record low admission rate this year. The newspaper said the California school accepted less than eleven percent of the students who applied.

College admissions officers give a number of reasons for the higher rates of rejection letters this year. They say the main reason is that high school seniors are applying to more schools than in the past. Some colleges reported big increases in the number of applications.Another reason is the general increase in students going to college.

Electronic forms make applying easier. For example, students can send an online form called the Common Application to many different colleges and universities.

Many students who apply to top schools are placed on a waiting list. They do not get a decision until the school knows how many applicants who are offered admission will accept the offer.Just as students compete,so do schools.

Wait-listed applicants might not find out until May or June,at the end of their senior year. Admissions officers say they use wait-listing because it is difficult to know which applicants really want to attend their school.

Questions 14~17 are based on the following monologue introducing the origin of an expression. You now have 20 seconds to read Questions 14~17.

Every people uses its own special words to describe things and express ideas:Some of these expressions are commonly used for many years.Others are popular for just a short time.

0ne such American expression is “Where’s the beef? ”It is used when something is not as good as it is said to be.In the early l980s,“Where’s the beef?”was one of the most popular expressions in the United States. It seemed as if everyone was using it all the time.Beef,of course,is the meat from a cow and probably no food is more popular in America than the hamburger made from beef.In the l960s a busi nessman named Ray Kroc began building small restaurants that sold hamburgers at a low price.Kroc called his restaurant “McDonald’ s”.Kroc cooked hamburgers quickly so people in a hurry could buy and eat them without waiting.By the end of the l960s the McDonald’s Company was selling hamburgers in hundreds of restaurants from California to Maine. Not surprisingly,Ray Kroc became one of the richest

businessmen in America.Other business people watched his success. Some of them opened their own hamburger restaurants. One company, called “Wendy’s”,began to compete with McDonald’s.Wendy’s said its hamburgers were bigger than McDonald’s or anyone else’s.The Wendy’s Company created the expression “Where’s the beef?”to make people believe that Wendy’s hamburgers were the biggest. It produced a television advertisement to sell this idea. The Wendy’s television advertisement showed three old women eating hamburgers. The bread that covered the meat was very big,but inside there was only a tiny bit of meat. One of the women said she would not eat a hamburger with such a little piece of beef.“Where’s the beef?”she shouted in a funny voice. These advertisements for Wendy’s hamburger restaurants were a success from the first day they appeared on television. As we said,it seemed everyone began using the expression “Where’s the beef?”

Questions l8~20 are based on an interview about u murder. You now have l5 seconds to read

  Questions l8~20.

W:Police in North London are treating as murder the death of a man thought to be in his forties whose body was found in a pedestrian subway in Neasden. The man leading the hunt is Detective Chief Superintendent John Day,who explains what they know of the man’s movements in the early hours of this morning.

M:What we’ve learned is the fact that he left the Level One Club, which is a drinking club in Neasden Lane, about 1:30 a.rrL,and we’re trying to account for movements up till 2:15 a.irk, because it was about that time he was found by a member of the club,an employee. He was found in the underpass.

the pedestrian way, under the North Circular Road.Death was due to multiple head injuries. We un-derstand that there may have been two girls and a man who was drunk in close proximity to the en— trance to the subway, who may have seen the man walking in that direction,or any attacker who may have been following him.

W:About what time would you think that they were there?

M:Just after half past one to a quarter past two.

W:Then in that case the gap you have is really quite short. It’s only n-lore or less half a hour or forty minutes.

  M:In fact,yes,as short as that.

W:And how far away from the Neasden underpass was the drinking club?

  M:Fifty meters.

W:And at the moment you know of no other people in the area whom you want to talk to,other than the drunken man and the two women who were seen with him or near him at some time?

M:Yes.The club closed at half past one and there may have been other people who left the club who went that way.We understand that there were also minicab drivers parked in the area who may have seen something as well.

W:As it is,I take it you haven’t been able to identify them.

  M:N0,not at this stage.

  W:Well,thank you very much.

  Section I Listening Comprehension

  Part A

1.4/four。 So that means we’ve got four places left,即还剩四个名额,其中的places left即是男士话语和题目中的 vacancies(空位,空缺)。

  2.Tuesday。 It’S due to begin on Tuesday,7 P.m to 9 P.m,考生要注意拼写。

3.1ibrary。 (Can you tell me where the course is held?),女士在第四个话轮的第一句话中进行了回答:it’S in the Main Building…immediately opposite the library,即上课地点是正对着图书馆的主楼。

  4.tutoring。

  5.second-hand。 You can get a second-hand one for around£20…,考生同样要注意拼写。

  Part B

  6.Lonely persons/people。 Do you think who’S getting hooked?

  8.destroying their relationships。 And 68 percent…was destroying their relationships。

  9.The/A living room。在听音时我们发现男士在最后一段回答中指出.....you can put the computer…like a living room(可以把电脑放在一个公共区域,如起居室里)。

  10.joining a club。 But I think the best way is to join a club(但我认为最好的办法就是加入俱乐部)。

  Part C

They do not get a decision…accept the offer一句可知处于等待名单上的学生等待的就是学校的决定,因此选[B]。

It is used when something is not as good as it is said to be,即这一表达用于指那些名不副实的东西,因此本题答案是[B]。15.[C]。 独自在介绍麦当劳时指出:…Ray Kroc began…that sold hamburgers at a low price…cooked hamburgers quickly SO people in a hurry could buy and eat them without waitin9,说明其汉堡的特点就是便宜和快捷,然后指出麦当劳大获成功。

Other business people watched his success(其他商人都看到了他的这种成功),紧接着说这些人也开始开汉堡店。 18.[C]。 第一个话轮中,女士一开始提及案件时即指出....thought to be in his forties…,即死者四十多岁,因此本题答案是[C]。

19.[B]。 首先,在第一个话轮中,女士指出:...body was found in a pedestrian subway in Neasden,说明死者尸体是在地下通道中发现的;其次。 He was found in the underpass, the pedestrian way, under the North Circular Road。
