英语四级观点作文范文

Do Lucky Numbers Really Bring Good Luck?1

There are people who believe that some numbers bring good luck, while others bring bad luck。 For instance, in China the number eight is thought to be lucky。 Turning our attention to the West, we find that the number seven is considered lucky, but the number 13 is avoided like the plague。

In spite of all these claims, most people would agree that there is little evidence that numbers have any influence on our lives。 In fact, they say, the reverse seems to be the case。 For one thing, we might expect calculators to break down every time they note the number 13, and for another, although every week has seven days we know that not every week is lucky for us。

Weighing the pros and cons of these arguments, I am inclined to agree with the latter point of view。 It is obvious that there is no scientific basis for the belief that there is a connection between luck and numbers。 All in all, it seems to me to be superstition。

Should One Expect a Reward When Doing a Good Deed?2

There is no denying the fact that it is a controversial topic whether one should expect a reward when doing a good deed。 Peoples opinions differ sharply on this issue。 Some hold the positive view。 They say that it is a natural thing for one to get rewarded after he has made contributions to the society, especially in an age of market economy。 Otherwise, people would be discouraged from helping others。

Others, however, hold the opposite view。 They maintain that one should learn from Lei Feng and expect no reward when helping others。 Anyway, everything is not a commodity。 The whole society would be in danger if we all calculated conscience and affection in terms of money。  Anyway, as the saying goes, it is love, instead of money, that turns the world around。

Personally, I believe that we should not go to extremes。 On the one hand, we should recognize and reward in time people who have done a good deed or good deeds; on the other hand, we should keep it in mind that we do not help others for money, but out of love and responsibility。 Only in this way can we achieve a really harmonious society。

Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary?3

A test of spoken English will be included as an optional component of College English Test 。 Some people argue that it is absolutely necessary to hold a test of spoken English in China because we have been informed frequently that a Chinese student who has been learning English for over ten years cannot even communicate with a native speaker。 A test of spoken English will bring the college students an awareness of the importance of oral English, and will thus help them with their communicating skills。

On the other hand, some others still maintain that a good command of reading and writing skills will be enough for the English learners。 To some extent their opinion derives from the fact that students are already under considerable pressure from their coursework。 Another required test will only add to their burden。

In my opinion, a test of spoken English will do more good than harm。 Since China will continue its policy of opening and reform, the ability to speak English fluently is a must for anyone who wants to surpass others in a highly competitive society。 Whether I take the test or not, I shall spare no efforts to practice oral English in the remaining years of my college study。

  Will E—books Replace Traditional Books?4

There is no denying the fact that e—books have gained increasing popularity in the past years along with the development of information technology。 Taking a look around, we can find examples too numerous to list。 Actually, modern readers seem to spend more time on e—books than on traditional ones。

As a consequence, it has emerged as a hotly debated topic whether e—books will take the place of traditional books in the future。 Some hold the positive view。 They claim that it is natural for books to be come electronic as mankind steps into a digital age。 Compared with traditional books, e—books have some obvious advantages。 For one thing, it is convenient to read on line as modern people have easy access to the Internet。 For another, reading e—books saves money。

Personally, I believe that e—books cannot replace all traditional books。 First, you can mark a traditional book and write your comments in the margin but you can hardly do that on e—books。 Secondly, to many people, only the smell of print and the feel of paper can provide the true sense of reading and learning。 Therefore, in my opinion, traditional books will still exist in the future。
