One explanation is that the Duanwu festival originated from people’s worship of dragons.In ancient China,people believed the dragon was the god in charge of water,which was vitally important to daily life and agricultural production.On the day of Duanwu,people raced dragon boats to entertain the god and offered him Zongzi as a treat.The sole purpose was to please the god to ensure a year of favorable weather.
Some people believe Duanwu comes from activities instigated by ancient sorcerers.These activities were held in early summer when the hot weather was about to bring diseases to people who didn’t have modern devices and medicines to protect themselves.So,ancient sorcerers encouraged people to wear fragrant pouches and hang mugwort and calamus on their doors to drive away the so-called evil spirits that caused diseases.
Scholars may provide many other explanations about the origin of the Duanwu festival.But if you ask ordinary people about its origin,you’ll get the same answer.They will tell you that the Duanwu festival honors the great poet,Qu Yuan.They’ll also tell you the story that has been passed down for more than 2,000 years.
Qu Yuan was born in 340 BC,during the Warring States Period.At that time,there were seven states struggling among themselves to unify China.Of the seven states,Qin was the strongest and Chu the largest.
Qu Yuan was a noble of Chu.During his lifetime,the powerful kingdom of Chu fell into a decline.
Early in his life,Qu Yuan won the confidence of the King of Chu,and was his deputy prime minister,helping draft laws and determine foreign policy.When he saw the danger posed by the ambitious Qin State,he proposed government reforms and an alliance with the neighboring Qi state as a way to ensure Chu’s safety.
But the King of Chu was surrounded by self-seekers,who were jealous of Qu Yuan.They accepted bribes from the Qin’s envoy,dissuaded the King from taking Qu Yuan’s advice and brought about the poet’s estrangement from the King.Qu Yuan was finally sent into exile for 20 years.
During those desperate years,Qu Yuan helplessly watched his beloved country become weaker every day.In the year 278 BC,the capital of Chu was stormed by troops from Qin.In great pain,Qu Yuan wrote “Lisao” or “The Lament”,the greatest of all his poems.On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month,he drowned himself in the Milo River,because he was hopeless about his country’s future.
Qu Yuan died thousands of years ago,but he is remembered every year for his love of and loyalty to his country and his people.In his poems,he wrote:
Long did I sigh and wipe away my tears,
To see my people bowed by grieves and fears.

Probably the most exciting and interesting aspect of the festival is the racing of the Dragon Boats.These races not only symbolize the peoples attempt to save Chu Yuan,they also demonstrate the Chinese virtues of cooperation and teamwork.
Another activity of the Festival is the making and eating of a kind of dumpling called Tzungtzu .When it became known that Chu Yuan was gone forever,the people,living along the river,threw cooked rice into the water as a sacrifice to their dead hero.They wrapped rice in bamboo leaves,and stuffed it with ham,beans,bean paste,salted egg yokes,sausages,nuts,and/or vegetables.
To the Chinese the fifth lunar moon is more than just the Dragon Boat Festival.Since antiquity,they have believed that this month is a pestilential and danger-fraught period.Children born in this month are said to be difficult to raise,and people tend to concentrate their efforts during this time attempting to protect their families from ills and misfortune.The day of the Dragon Boat Festival is customarily the time when cleaning and sanitation(卫生) are stressed .Most families hang calamus and artemisia above their doors,both as a decoration and as a preventive against pestilence.
Ancient folk medicines such as realgar )are added to the food eaten on the Festival day.This is believed to prevent disease and to promote a healthy digestive system.The drinking of realgar in wine supposedly relieves the effects of poisons accumulated in human bodies.
The sachets(Hsiang Pao in Chinese are very popular with children and they vie with each other to collect as many as possible.Children are not the only ones who collect Hsiang Pao.Older people are often given them as a symbol of respect,and they are highly prized because of the intricate and beautiful embroidery that adorns them.
The Dragon Boat Festival is an entertaining and enjoyable event.It gives the observer an opportunity to glimpse a part of the rich Chinese cultural heritage.

During the holiday of Dragon Boat Festival,I got together with my family to have a big meal.We ofen ate the zongzi.It tasted very nice.And we saw the Dragon Boat Races.I felt excited because the race was bustling with noise and excitement.At Dragon Boat Festival,we also drank realgar wine.Some people thought drank realgar wine can protect themselves from illness.

The audience will cheer for the teams and the competitors try their best to make the boat go fast.It is very lively.Besides the competition,eating the traditional food zongzi is favored by everyone.For me,it is very delicious.My grandma makes the best zongzi.She has the special recipe and it fits my stomach.So every time I go back hometown,my grandma will make it for me.In other places,drinking the special wine and hanging the leaf are also the tradition.The preserve of the traditional festival makes our culture profound.

Today,it is the Dragon Boat Festival.My grandma and grandpa came to myhouse.My grandmother said to me:"their families hang mugwort calamus,eatzongzi,go up the hill and pick green,and eat zongzi and make zongzi.Early inthe morning,I followed my grandma pack up,first of all take out two pieces ofleaves,one large and one small learn to the appearance of the grandmother outof the corner,again a little bit on the folded Angle cone into the soakglutinous rice,some red bean paste,and glutinous rice was built.I started tobe a little smug,thinking:its hard for me to make a simple dumpling.But whenI put the leaves back on,the glutinous rice was like a naughty child who didntlisten to my mands and jumped out in succession.I was like a cat on hot brickstoday,fortunately,my grandma solution for me get some glutinous rice around abit,I breathed a sigh of relief,the in the mind of a heavy piece of rock.After a few setbacks,I finally got to the last step.I took the palm rope and wrapped it in a circle and then I gave it to mygrandmother.It was then that I realized that zongzi was a handicraft work andit was very difficult to wrap up.
