在日常生活中，人们都知道爱护自己的面孔和双手，因为它们"抛头露面"，故倍加修饰和护养。人们也知道保护自己的内脏器官，因为它们为身体的中枢，人们更知道，头脑很重要，不能受伤，因为它是人体的司令部，指挥机关。无论它们当中的哪一部分出现故障，都会导致疾病的发生。而对于人体最底层的脚部，因距内脏、头脑甚远，故一般不予重视。人们并不知道，脚是人的第二心脏，在脚部底密集着许多神经末梢和微细血管，也满布着众多的植物神经。植物神经由交感神经和副交感神经组成，它具有调节心脏机能，平缩肌肉和腺体(消化腺，汗腺和部分内分泌腺)的功能。交感神经对上述功能有兴奋作用。副交感神经正好相反，具有抑制作用。
