在旧GRE中，不仅常见的GRE词汇能考到18000左右，而且充斥着大量日常生活中难以见到的生僻词汇，相对的，改革之后GRE词汇要求降低，但是仍然不容小觑。
GRE词汇是一个宽泛的概念;也可以说不认识的、有用词汇都是GRE词汇;但是GRE词汇也不是无限多，除了过于偏的专业词汇，再除去衍生词汇，综合历年的考试真题来算，GRE的核心词汇应该在10000出头;也就是说，一个已经掌握5000词汇的考生需要再增加5000以上单词才能够应付GRE考试。
在新GRE考试词汇量要求中，由于将类比反义词类题型取消，单词量要求相对减少，生僻词考查力度削弱，主要考查一些具有特征的单词，即使某个生词不认识也完全能根据上下文的语境把词的大致含义给推断出来。
从上述可以看出来，新GRE考试对词汇的要求降低了很多，但是新GRE考试词汇量要求的变化并不是说考生可以对单词放松警惕，对于一些常见词汇还是应该掌握，像阅读、句子填空等题型都是以单词为基础的。

1. GRE绝大部分使用的单词都是很正常的四级，六级，托福水平的单词。
2. 超过托福水平的.那2000个单词中，大约常考的只有一半不到，也就是1000个必备的核心词。掌握这1000个，做题正确率到60%的基础就有了。也就是155+的基础就有了。“再要你命3000”以及“红宝书”的选词范围都超过了这1000个，可以说，这两本书对于这部分单词的掌握并非高效。
3. 不常考的另外那1000个单词，其中大约有600个不难，但就是不常考。大约有400个左右确实非常晦涩难懂。如果你的目标是165+，那这1000个必须要掌握。对于这1000个单词，“再要你命3000”的选词范围又太小了，是无论如何也覆盖不了的。“红宝书”的选词范围可能足够，但是你知道背红宝书是多么的痛苦。
4. 对于每次考试中出现的新词，或者说近期考试中出现的新词，那是任何一本书籍都无法覆盖的。这只能靠不断累积来解决。
