  Exploding the Myths about the American Family

  The American family is dying .The highest divorce rate in history indicates that marriage is becoming unpopular. Most young people today have no intention of marrying and raising a family. More and more working women abandon their children to babysitters or day-care centers.

  What you’ve just read sounds true, doesn’t it? But it’s all false. A new study reveals that the American family is stronger than ever. This study, conducted by Br. Mary Joe Bane, analyzes past and current census data and other sociological research about the American family.

  Dr. Bane says, “I started my research with the idea that the American family was going to hell and needed to be replaced by some new child-care institutions. I wanted to prove this with statistics. I believed all the myths, but statistics showed that the American family wasn’t dying.” Dr. Bane’s study and several others shatter many of the myths about the American family. Let’s take a look at some of the myths--and the fact that refute them

  Myth 1: THE AMERICAN FAMILY IS DYING BECAUSE OF THE SOARING DIVORCE RATE.

  The American family is changing, not dying: It is becoming smaller, women are becoming more equal, and the divorce rate is high. But Dr. Bane says that, despite the high divorce rate, “marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only 2% marry more than twice. In the United States, most marriages are not fly-by-night, and people don’t continually change partners without marriage. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.”

  Myth 2: WORKING MOTHERS ARE WRECKING THE FAMILY BY NEGLECTING THEIR CHILDREN. .

  “There’s no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home,” says Dr. Bane. “You have to divide the time into different categories: simple physical and custodial function and educational time or development time when a mother plays with the child. So far we haven’t seen the amount of educational or development time varies much, whether or not the mother works outside the home.”

  In fact, Dr. Bane finds evidence that working mothers--especially in the middle class--try to compensate for working by, setting aside time exclusively for their children “They probably read more to their children and spend more time in planned activities with them than nonworking mothers do,” says Dr. Bane.

  In her book, Here to Stay: American Families in the Twenty First Century, Or. Bane says, “Television--not working mothers--is by far the most significant new child-care arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age 14 is watching television. The average preschooler watches TV about 33 hours a week, one-third of his waking hours. The average sixth grader watches about 31 hours of television a week.”

  School is the second most time-consuming activity for children. They spend an average of about 19 hours a week in school. A larger proportion of children go to school now than ever before, and they stay in school longer. Another big change is the proportion of very young children enrolled in nursery schools and kindergartens: from 27% in 1965 to 41% in 1973. Compared with these two dramatic changes in child activity-greater hours devoted to television and to school--the changes caused by mothers working outside the home “appear almost trivial,” according to Dr. Bane.
