Say No to Chinese in English Class

Since language learning has become an irresistible trend nowadays, English, as the most widely used communication tool in the world, has gained more popularity than the other languages. Thus how to teach English has aroused an increasing concern in English teaching domain and out. Inevitably, there comes the dispute over whether Chinese should have a role to play in teaching English. From the perspective of a student, I propose an absolutely negative answer to the question.

To begin with, language acquisition demands more than the study of language expression but also understanding of the culture and history behind. It is undeniable that no single language can be one hundred percent fully converted into another language. Therefore, the Chinese equivalents in English teaching frequently suffer ambiguity and loss of original implications. Take“borrow” and“lend” for example, both mean“jie”in Chinese, yet their English definitions are remarkably different. “Borrow”means“take or receive from another person, with his or her permission and understanding that it will be returned after a certain time”and“lend”means“to give the possession or use of something on the condition that it will be returned later”. Without English explanation, an English learner will find it difficult to distinguish the two. So in English classroom, Chinese actually impedes learners’ understanding of English.

Furthermore, once a teacher teaches English in Chinese, it is inevitable for him to follow Chinese way of thinking. Thus after being filtered through, the essence of English language lapses when reaching the students at the end. For the students’ part, they are likely to be conditioned to rely on Chinese since their mother tongue is much easier to convey their opinion. In this case, the situation will deteriorate. Studying English via Chinese translation just strengthens the Chinese thinking mode, which partly explains the phenomenon of“Chinglish”. Only by throwing off the walking stick of Chinese explanation, can students be trained to express themselves in English and think in English. It can be a bit painful in the beginning, but no pains, no gains.

From all above, considerable disadvantages can be observed in teaching English in Chinese. As for us students, the study cannot amount to anything if we still rely on our mother tongue in the course of learning a foreign language. Therefore, I want to call on both teachers and students to use English exclusively for the sake of good command of English.

In western universities, it is a common practice to credit and enroll students who have outstanding athletic talents. Now some Chinese universities also lower their academic requirements to take in such students. To what extent do you agree with this practice? Write a composition of about 400 words to state your view.

In the first part of your essay you should state clearly your main argument, and in the second part you should support your argument with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or make a summary.

  Sports Students Should Be Enrolled

It becomes more and more common that many universities, especially those famous ones, lower their academic standards to enroll students who have special athletic talents. Some people hold a strong objection to it while the rest contend it acceptable and reasonable. As far as I'm concerned, I fully appreciate this policy.

First of all, all students are granted an equal chance to access to higher education, while academic scores are not the only yardstick that matters. High academic scores are rarely seen in those sports talents, since nearly all of them devote their early school years to tough and arduous training. In the course of physical exercise, the spirit of diligence and perseverance is observed, which is no different from that of their peers at school. Thus they should be awarded an opportunity to the ivory tower in spite of their poor scores in entrance examinations. Universities can help these students actualize their dreams to become a knowledgeable person. Also those universities may supply athletic students with better conditions to improve their sports performance.

Furthermore, it is also very helpful for universities to build their fame and strengthen their competitiveness in sports games. Competition between universities is extensive, so most famous universities pay attention not only to academic researches but also to many other aspects, for example, arts and sports. Good athletic scores can improve the fame of the universities, which in turn can attract more excellent new comers. And those sports talents may also play an important role in piquing other students’ interest in sports. All these help to sharpen the competitive edges of universities.

Last but not least, taking in sports talents may help to relax the tension of exclusive concern with scores in current society. With college entrance exam getting more and more demanding, school children have suffered more pressure from the high expectation of teachers and parents. However, the new practice of taking in sports students has shown another direction for both parents and children. Hopefully, to some extent, the anxiety can be relieved of a large crowd.

All in all, enrolling athletic students by lowering academic standards has brought more advantages to our society. As proved in ancient wisdom, every road leads to Rome. Academic scores are not the only way to higher education. Universities should provide an equal chance and take in sports talents.
