Chinese President Jiang Zemin and his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush have both congratulated the opening of an expo on former US President Richard Nixon, who made an “ice-breaking” visit to China 30 years ago.
A free exhibition named "Journeys to Peace and Cooperation" opened at the Museum of Chinese History on Wednesday, to mark the event.
President Jiang Zemin praises Nixon’s visit as an historical event, and says the handshake by the leaders of China and the US three decades ago opened a new page in Sino-US relations. He says although bilateral relations have experienced ups and downs since then, the general trend has been going upward.
He adds history shows cooperation and exchanges between the two countries is in the best interests of both peoples and is conducive to the world peace and stability.
US President Bush says Nixon’s trip to China started a new path in bilateral ties and the two countries are still continuing on this path. Bush says China-US bilateral ties continue to develop based on mutual respect and on the understanding of the aspirations of both peoples. He adds the two countries are looking for more ways to cooperate and benefit both peoples and the world.
The show includes about 200 artifacts, including pictures, original handwriting, clothes, presents and previously classified government documents. Two documentary films are also being shown.
The show will also be run in Shanghai next month and the United States in January next year.

With the change of traditionally sexist attitudes in China, the social status of women in the country has been raised, and the issue of domestic violence has become a new social focus.
An article in the Beijing Evening News cites statistics showing that most domestic violence cases in China are accompanied by psychological abuse, such as slamming of doors, smashing things and abuse and threats made between spouses. The article quotes experts as saying that psychological violence is as harmful as physical violence, and that some western countries have had much experience in dealing with this form of abuse. Besides being made to pay compensation, people who use violence in the home are also forced to attend psychological training programs.
But the experts say that China has not found an effective way to deal with such cases, and called for the establishment of laws to protect victims of domestic violence.
