The United States has presented a new draft resolution on Iraq to the UN Security Council.

Washington hopes the council will vote to adopt the new resolution by the end of the week.

The draft has changed significantly since it was first put forward last month, but it still frees the US to take military action against Iraq.

In an attempt to meet the concerns of other Security Council members, the new US draft gives Iraq a "final opportunity" to comply with UN inspectors.

But it remains to be seen whether the latest draft, written with British support, will satisfy the other three permanent members of the security council - France, Russia and China.
