Chinese President Jiang Zemin has returned to Beijing after concluding his working visit to the United States and participating in the tenth APEC leaders informal summit meeting.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao says that President Jiang’s US tour was constructive and fruitful.

He notes that during the visit, Jiang Zemin and his US counterpart George W. Bush exchanged views on international and regional affairs of common concern and reached consensus in the fields of economy, trade and culture.

The two leaders have expressed satisfaction with bilateral cooperation on anti-terrorism, saying that both countries are opposed to all forms of terrorism.

On the Taiwan issue, Jiang Zemin expressed the hope that the US would uphold the One China policy and play a constructive role in China’s reunification. Bush said that he would continue to respect the One China policy and oppose any form of Taiwanese independence.

The spokesman adds that before his departure, Jiang Zemin invited Bush to pay a second visit to China. Bush accepted the invitation, but no date has yet been set. 

Chinese and US officials have met in Beijing to share strategic intelligence on drug control in a fresh move to tighten bilateral cooperation in this field.

The First Sino-US Narcotics Control Strategic Intelligence Sharing Conference was held in accordance with agreements China and the United States reached at a meeting on law enforcement cooperation in Washington, D.C. in March this year.

An official with China's National Narcotics Control Commission said the two-day meeting will focus on issues including China-US intelligence sharing, narco-organizations in the "Golden Triangle," precursor chemical control, Ecstasy control, money laundering and proposals for China-US cooperation on drug control.

China and the United States began cooperation on drug control in the 1980s. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on anti-narcotics cooperation in 1987.

Taiwan's aviation authority has put an end to the search work for bodies and wreckage of a Taiwan flight liner which crashed in May.

Investigators have also announced that metal fatigue on the plane's tail may be the key reason for the accident, ruling out pilot error, bad weather and other factors.

After over five months of search work, a total of 179 bodies have been recovered along with over 2,000 crash debris.

All 206 passengers and 19 crew members on board China Airlines' Flight CI 611died when the Boeing 747 plane slammed into the sea near Penghu Island.

A final report on the accident will be made public in September 2004.

China's central bank, the People's Bank of China, says three more banks from Taiwan have been approved to set up representative offices in Shanghai and Beijing.

The three Taiwan banks are First Commercial Bank, Land Bank of Taiwan and Chinatrust Commercial Bank.

Bank applicants wishing to establish representative offices on the mainland are required to have good commercial standing and to have been operating profitably for the past consecutive three years.

Chang Hwa Commercial Bank Limited and United World Chinese Commercial Bank were the first two banks from Taiwan to receive approval to enter the mainland.

China's second-largest television maker, Konka Group Co Ltd, said on Tuesday it had jumped back into the black in the third quarter by selling more mobile phones and avoiding a price war in its core appliance business.

Konka, fresh from its first full-year loss in 20 years in 2001, has said it planned to avoid a margin-punishing industry war by focusing on mobile phones, high-tech televisions and sideline businesses such as property.

US stocks ended mostly lower on Tuesday after disappointing data on consumer confidence and retail spending made Wall Street question the strength of the US economy and the stock market's October advance from five-year lows.

The Dow average closed up slightly at 8,368. The Nasdaq fell over one per cent, to 1,300.

Weak US consumer-confidence data has sent European stocks sharply lower.

London's FTSE -100 lost nearly four per cent to 3,935. In Paris, the CAC 40 fell five per cent at 2,965. In Frankfurt, the DAX index shed over four and a half per cent to 3,047.

The Chinese government says it is trying to stamp out the illegal export of animal products.

Dear horns, tiger bones and bear biles are ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. Over the past few decades, China has made efforts to pursuade its citizens to abandon the use of wild animals in treating chronic diseases.

With dear horns and tiger bones virtually phased out of the medicine market, the government is now trying to improve conditions on several farms that captivate bears. Larger cages and outdoor facilities for the animals are being provided.
