Chinese President Jiang Zemin has met with the Mayor of San Francisco while making a stop-over in the US city after attending the 10th Economic Leaders’ Meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation in Los Cabos, Mexico.


During his meeting with mayor Willie Brown at the airport, the Chinese president said his US visit has been fruitful, describing his talks with US President George W. Bush as a success.


The mayor said San Francisco, as a sister city of Shanghai, is willing to carry out more cooperation with Chinese cities.


During his stay in Los Cabos, the Chinese president delivered important speeches at the APEC sessions, and met with leaders of Mexico, Indonesia, Russia, South Korea and Japan.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin has held separate meetings with the leaders of Russia, South Korea and Japan on the sidelines of the recently concluded 10th annual APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.


Meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mikhailovich Kasyanov, Jiang Zemin says China supports Russia in combating terrorist activities by Chechen rebels. He again condemned the Moscow hostage taking by the rebels, and says China is glad the Russian government has resolved the crisis.


In talks with South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, Jiang Zemin says that China supports a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula, and stresses that China hopes North Korea and the United States will resolve the issue peacefully through talks.


During his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Jiang Zemin spoke of both the traditional ties between the two countries and Japan’s historical aggression against China. He hopes that the Japanese government can resolve relevant issues properly in order to secure bilateral friendly relations that have been ongoing for generations.

Two deputies have been deprived of their seats in the Ninth National People's Congress, the top legislative body in China, for breaking the law.


The congress's standing committee has announced that one of the deputies is Li Jingwei, former chairman and general manager of the Guangdong Jianlibao Corporation, a well-known sports drink company. The other is Sang Yuechun, former deputy to the Ninth People's Congress of Jilin Province and legal representative of Changchun Jigang Group.


The announcement says Li Jingwei has been accused of embezzling over 400 thousand US dollars from public funds.


Sang Yuechun has been accused of the crime of intending to cause injury to others, racketeering and obstructing public duties.

China is starting temporary anti-dumping measures against imports of polyester chips made in South Korea.


China's Foreign Trade Ministry has determined that dumping of the South Korea-made polyester chips has caused substantial damage to Chinese industries.


As part of the preliminary judgement by the ministry, importers will pay cash deposits from Tuesday to Chinese Customs in accordance with the judgment.


The trade ministry says further investigations will be necessary before the government can issue a final judgment on the matter.

China Netcom, the fixed-line telecom carrier based in the country's north, remains calm during the listing of its biggest rival overseas and a senior executive says his company needs more time before going public abroad.


President of China Netcom, Xi Guohua, says the company wants to consolidate its internal structure after a major reorganization.


He notes that China Netcom is waiting for a less hostile environment in the international market before going public abroad.


China Netcom's rival in the south, China Telecom, announced at the weekend it would raise up to 3.7 billion US dollars by selling nearly 17 billion shares in Hong Kong and New York early next month.


Its initial public offering will be the world's third-largest this year.


The country's two mobile carriers, China Mobile and China Unicom, are also absorbing money by issuing corporate bonds and stocks in the domestic stock market.

A brand new and bigger Air China has been set up. It aims to become the top airline in Asia and even the world.


The company is the biggest under the newly regrouped China National Aviation Holding Company.


Air China now owns more than 110 aircrafts, 300 air routes and makes over 3,000 regular flights per week. The airline plans to acquire 15 Boeing and Airbus planes next year. A new Boeing 737-800 will fly to Beijing in a few days.


President of the company, Li Jiaxiang, says Air China also prepares to be listed abroad.


According to the company, the country's biggest air cargo company jointly organized by Air China, Hong Kong CITIC Company and Beijing Capital Airport is expected to be set up soon. The joint venture company will have Air China as its biggest shareholder.

US stocks slumped on Monday, pulling back from a three-week rally, as investors worried this week's economic data could signal that U.S. growth remains weak.


The Dow Jones industrial average dropped nearly one per cent, to 8,368. And the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index dropped over one per cent, to 1,315.


Over in Europe, stocks inched up on the strength of better-than-expected third-quarter earnings updates.


London's FTSE-100-share index closed up nearly one per cent at 4,090. The CAC 40 Index in Paris closed up more than two per cent, at 3,120. And Frankfurt's DAX was up over three per cent, at 3,198.

             



China has successfully launched an earth resource satellite from the Taiyuan Launching Center in Shanxi Province.

The new satellite, the second ZY-2, is mainly intended for territorial surveys, environmental monitoring and protection, urban planning, crop yield assessment, disaster monitoring and scientific space experiments.

It is a transmitting-type remote sensing satellite, developed by the Chinese Institute of Space Technology, and was launched with Chinese carrier rocket, Long-March 4-B.

Sources with the State Development Planning Commission say China is to make use of 50 billion US dollars foreign investment by year-end, an increase of three billion US dollars on last year.

Officials say China has secured more than 62 billion US dollars in foreign investment under contracts, and over 34 billion of which were actually utilized during the first 8 months of this year.

China’s Ministry of Education says Chinese people now enjoy better access to various forms of education thanks to large amount of investment.

Official data shows that the educational budget last year accounted for more than three percent of the country’s total gross domestic product. Now, as many as 320 million students are studying at up to 1.4 million educational institutes throughout China.

American media giant AOL Time Warner, plans to invest four billion yuan, or about 483 million US dollars to build an outdoor movie studio that is also expected to become a tourist attraction in China.

AOL subsidiary Warner Bros films said in July it had struck a deal to edge into the Chinese movie market by buying a stake in Shanghai Paradise Film Distributing Co, which owns a 1,400-seat theatre in Shanghai.
