Chinese President Jiang Zemin has made a speech at the just ended APEC Economic Leaders Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, stressing regional economic stability, the important role of the WTO and the fight against terrorism.

President Jiang said no country can realize development behind closed doors in the world today. Given the risks and difficulties in global and regional economies, he said it is all the more essential to strengthen coordination and cooperation with one another.

Jiang noted that a sound multilateral trading system and fair trading environment are key guarantees for a sustained and steady growth in world trade. He said that while a new round of multilateral trade negotiations has been launched, its progress has been slow.

Jiang Zemin emphasized that as a victim of terrorism, China strongly condemns and opposes all forms of terrorism and reaffirms its support for international efforts against terrorism.

In the wake of the deadly bombing on the Indonesian island of Bali, a series of terrorist attacks in the Philippines and the hostage-taking by Chechen separatists in Moscow, global security issues have dominated the 10th annual APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting. The meeting was originally intended to discuss more economic issues.

China’s policy on expanding domestic demand has ensured the steady growth of its economy.

Since 1998, China has used national debts of 660 billion yuan, or about 80 billion US dollars, to build up its infrastructure facilities and industries.

China has also taken a series of actions to stimulate its domestic demand and build a sound social welfare system, including prolonged holidays, and improved consumer and environmental policies .

China's law-making body is considering a set of new rules that will forbid the investment of insurance funds in non-insuranc or non-securities.

China's draft revised insurance law will forbid the investment of insurance funds in non-insurance or non-securities enterprises, state media reported.

The restriction is designed to reduce risk in insurance fund investment, official Xinhua News Agency reported late Friday.

The draft law is now with the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress on for a third round of consideration.

The NPC basically thinks the draft law's ban on direct investment of insurance funds in commercial enterprises is common in the international insurance business and won't affect the indirect investment of insurance funds in the capital market.

China state-owned insurance companies are bracing for the impact of foreign competition in line with the country's World Trade Organization agreement that will lift restrictions on foreign investment in the sector in 2004.

China's four major banks-- the Commercial Bank, Construction Bank, Bank of China and Agriculture Bank-- have made the magazine “Asian Bankers” top-ten banks list.

The Commercial Bank ranked fifth with a total volume of 521 billion US dollars. The Construction Bank and the Bank of China ranked 7th and 9th, respectively, while the Agriculture Bank rounded out the top ten.

The four banks landing at the top of this year's list are all Japanese ones.

The magzaine's editors note that capital revenue at the Chinese banks lags behind the average revenue level among all Asian banks except Japanese and Pakistani ones despite placing high in terms of total volume. The non-performing loan rate at the banks is also relatively high.

Honda Motor Company, Guangzhou Automobile Group and Dongfeng Automobile Company have announced plans to set up a joint-venture company in Guangzhou to produce automobiles mainly for export.

Honda will have a controlling stake in the venture. The plan has been submitted to Chinese authorities for approval.

The new company will produce sedans in China for sale abroad using Honda's global sales network.

Honda and Dongfeng have a long-standing cooperative relationship. Dongfeng currently manufactures engines and a few other parts for Guangzhou Honda.

In view of China's huge auto market, Honda will work to develop more models suitable for Chinese consumers and will also introduce more of its popular models to China.

According to experts, China is in the process of transforming itself from a car consumption nation to a car production nation, which is permitting a growing number of world-famous auto manufacturers to enter the market.

Mainland and Taiwan experts in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province have called for greater agricultural cooperation across the Taiwan Straits.

The experts, who include people from universities and research institutes in the mainland and Taiwan, agreed that farmers on both sides of the Straits should work together to explore the international market.

WTO entry on both sides of the Taiwan Straits has granted wider access to the mainland and Taiwan markets, which has, in turn, created a more efficient and orderly competitive environment for cross-Straits cooperation on agriculture.

What do the world's movies say about the cultures where they come from?

Tell about a time someone took credit for something good that you did. Or a time you took credit for something you didn't do.
