Chinese President Jiang Zemin has made an important speech at the Gerorge Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University. The Chinese President briefed his audience about China's rapid development in economic, political and diplomatic fields and promised that the upcoming Party Congress in November will only further the country on this path.

The President believes that China and the United States share a lot of common interests and ought to step up consultation and cooperation in many fields, such as fighting against terrorism. As for Taiwan, the Chinese President said a peaceful reunification of China with an early solution of the Taiwan question will only contribute to stable and growing U.S.-China relations.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation opened its office in Beijing Thurday. As CRI's Yun Feng reports, the visiting US Attorney General John Ashcroft says it's a boost to the Sino-US cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

“Today I’m pleased to announce the United States and China have made progress in this area by establishing a legal attaché office for the Federal Bureau of Investigation here in Beijing”

Led by a Chinese American who has served for over two decades with the FBI, this office is expected to collaborate with China on issues such as organized and international crime and global terrorism.

The Attorney General adds that this provides an opportunity for the two countries to learn from each other about how to best serve one another in interests of the rules of law and the curtailment of terrorism.

This viewpoint was echoed in Thursday’s press conference held by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Spokesman Liu Jianchao says this is an active approach by the two countries in the area of law enforcement.

“China hopes and believes that the establishment of this organization will help China and the United States to cooperate in the fields of law enforcement and the fight against terrorism based on mutual interests.”

Liu Jianchao says China and the US has established a mechanism of mid to long term cooperation in anti-terrorism. It is a part of the international effort to defeat terrorism, as well as an important component of the constructive cooperative relationship between China and the US. The mechanism is working well on the basis of equality, cooperation and mutual benefit. China holds the right to open up a similar office in the US.

Attorney General Ashcroft is due to leave Beijing late on Thursday after staying here for two days. He says he is grateful for China’s support in the fight against terrorism.

"I was very pleased to hear my Chinese counterparts and those with whom I met, some who occupy different levels and portfolios of service than I do, uniformly indicate that wherever, whenever, however terrorism can be disrupted, it needs to be disrupted."

There are already a couple of representatives of law enforcement communities from the United States in Beijing, such as Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Naturalization Service, which are designed to collaborate with China against drug and human trafficking.

China will launch a communications satellite capable of preventing malicious interruptions to radio and TV signals.

The anti-jamming satellite, APSTAR VI, will be made by French-based Alcatel Space for APT Satellite Company in Hong Kong. It can carry signals to the whole of China, some Pacific regions and parts of the United States, and is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2004.

Sino Satellite Communications Corporation, or Sinosat, a primary carrier for China's satellite TV programming, has considered applying high-technology to a new, domestically made satellite to prevent airwave hi-jackings.

The transmission of a Sinosat satellite was illegally interrupted by Falun Gong cult followers in Taiwan last month.

IBM says it has built and operated the world's smallest working computer circuits, using an approach in which individual molecules move across an atomic surface like toppling dominoes.

The most complex circuit - a 12x17 nanometer sorter is so small that 190 billion could fit on a standard pencil-top eraser.

The new "molecule cascade" technique enabled the scientists to make working digital-logic elements about 260,000 times smaller than those used in today's most advanced semiconductor chips.

Internet search engine Google has quietly deleted over 100 controversial sites from some search result listings on its German and French Web sites.

Law student Ben Edelman and assistant professor Jonathan Zittrain at Harvard University conducted a automated testing of Google's massive 2.5 billion-page index and compared results returned by different foreign-language versions.

The study found that listings for 113 Web sites that are anti-Semitic, pro-Nazi or related to white supremacy have been either partially or fully removed from Google dot fr and Google dot de, though they are still available on the US site, Google.com.

Google says the removal aims to avoid legal liability, adding that some results may conflict with local laws. German law forbids material that is considered to incite racial and ethnic hatred, including the publication of Holocaust denials. Similar laws exist in France.

It is also indicated that each site was deleted after the company received a specific complaint from a foreign government.

The growth rate for personal computer shipments in China is expected to pick up next year, following a downtick this year caused by the global technology slowdown.

International Data Corp analyst Kitty Fok says shipments of personal computers in China are expected to grow about 14 percent from 2001 levels to 11.2 million units in 2002, the first time the rate has declined in several years.

In 2001, the number of shipments grew by a strong 24 percent to 9.8 million units.

Fok says growth rate is expected to pick up next year, or at least come in above this year's 14 percent.

Movies of the world

What do the world's movies say about the cultures where they come from?

Bollywood
In India, people love watching musicals on the big screen. Unlike Hollywood movies, these classic "Bollywood" films deal with simple people, traditional values and romantic themes.

The songs and happy endings may be all too similar for outsiders to enjoy. But modern India is a crazy place, much different than it was a few generations ago. Maybe Indians like their Bollywood plots because they reflect a past when life seemed more simple. For many Indians, Bollywood films show Indian culture as they’d like it to be.

Most Hollywood movies usually have big stars, large budgets and exciting special effects. But are all Americans as beautiful as the ones we see on the silver screen? Do all Westerners live lives of carefree wealth and freedom?

Certainly not, but one might think so from watching too many Hollywood films. Many Hollywood film stories are pure fantasies—not real examples of common culture in America. Hollywood prefers making movies highlighting the excesses and extremes of American culture. These movies usually sell best.
