What do the world's movies say about the cultures where they come from?
Apart from music, movies are the world’s most widely experienced form of entertainment. We watch movies to laugh, cry, be thrilled or maybe even to discover something new. And we can gain insights about culture through watching movies, too.
Some movies show the way a culture is, or perhaps how the filmmaker would like it to be. Some movies reflect the way a culture was, or how it will be in the future. Some movies show a culture in a straightforward, sometimes painfully honest manner.
Let’s look at some of the films made in different cultures.
Many films made by Chinese directors bring out the humorous side of Chinese people. Their movies often bring examples of seldom-seen Chinese emotions and worldviews. Chinese films talk about Chinese history, social issues or romance. Quite often the themes of these films are communicated in a subtle way.
Chinese movies from Hong Kong, on the other hand, often belong to the action genre. Martial arts adventures are the most popular of this type of movie.
