The diamond business in the bustling metropolis of Shanghai is booming since Chinese customs began to exempt the jewels from tariffs earlier this year.

In June, Chinese customs stopped charging tariffs on diamonds imported through the Shanghai Diamond Trade Center, the country's sole institution authorized to handle diamond import and export procedures in general trade.

It is the only place for diamond trading in China.

Diamonds and diamond powder imported through Pudong Customs in Shanghai was valued at about 26 million US dollars from January to September of this year.

The number of diamond dealers registered with the center's customs department increased from four to 29, including some from Israel, South Africa and Hong Kong. Their overall investment in Shanghai jumped from 7 million to 27 million US dollars.

China set up the trade center in June 2000 and the move to exempt diamonds from tariffs was designed to decrease diamond smuggling on the Chinese mainland.
