Un Secretary-General Kofi Annan has concluded his four-day working visit to China.

During the visit,Chinese President Jiang Zemin, Vice-President Hu Jintao and Vice-Premier

Qian Qichen met with Annan on separate occasions in Beijing. Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan also held talks with him.

They exchanged views on such issues as the strengthening of the UN's role in international affairs, UN reforms,anti-terrorism, Iraq, the Middle East, Afghanistan, and the prevention of AIDS.

Annan also received an honorary doctorate from Zhejiang University when he visited East China's Hangzhou.

China says it will make more efforts to contain the rapidly increasing spread of AIDS in the country.

The Ministry of Health says the first half of this year saw over a 16 percent increase in HIV carriers, compared with the same period last year.

China has launched a pilot project of comprehensive care and treatment for AIDS and has also streamlined the manufacture of domestic medicine to lower prices and make the drugs more affordable.

The central government increased its special budget last year for HIV/AIDS prevention and control from nearly two million US dollars to 12 million US dollars.

Currently, 68 percent of victims in the country were infected through drug abuse and other injections, nearly ten percent through blood transfusions, and about seven percent through sex.

China's consumer price index in the first nine months of this year dropped 0.8 percent year-on-year,unchanged from the figure for the first half of this year.

The National Bureau of Statistics says the retail price index during the nine months dropped nearly 1 and a half percent from a year earlier.

Urban consumer price index during the period fell 1 percent year-on-year,against growth of 1 percent a year ago, while rural price index dropped by nearly half a percent, against growth in 2001.

Global venture capital investor International Data Group, or IDG, says it plans to invest 1 billion US dollars in China over the next five years.

The company says this is because the rate of return for its previous projects in the country has reached 45 percent.



IDG President Patrick J. McGovern says the prosperous Yangtze River Delta will be one of the major destinations for investment.



He says IDG will pump 120 million US dollars into technology-intensive start-up companies in east China’s Jiangsu province.



It will be IDG's largest investment in the Yangtze Delta region since its entry into China in 1980.

Coca-Cola China Beverages Ltd has announced plans to invest 150 million US dollars in six new bottling plants in China over the next three years.

President of the company Paul Etchells says the investment will increase the total number of its bottling plants in China to 34.



At a ceremony marking the fifth anniversary of Chengdu Coca-Cola Beverages, Etchells says the investment will help the company seize a larger share of the soft drinks market in China, and create nearly 100,000 jobs.



Since its entry into China in 1979, the soft drink giant has invested over one billion US dollars in the country, and created over 400,000 jobs.

Japan's biggest automaker, Toyota, says it has won approval to start building its second car plant in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin.

A Toyota spokesman says the company plans to build its factory in the Tianjin Economic-Technological-Development area to make cars with the First Automotive Industry Group.


Investment and production details will be decided either this year or early next year.


Toyota formed a car production venture in August with First Auto to build as many as 400,000 units a year as it tries to catch up with rivals Volkswagen and General Motors.


It has plans to build 50,000 Toyota luxury autos at the new plant starting in mid-2005, possibly including models such as Crown, Camry and Mark Two.


Toyota also plans to sell 30,000 units a year of the Vios compact, the first car it produced in China. It is targeting a 10 percent share of the country's auto market.

US stocks tumbled on Wednesday, slamming the brakes on a four-day rally. A weak sales outlook and disappointing earnings from technology bellwether Intel brought corporate jitters back to the fore.

The Dow Jones industrial average slumped over two and a half per cent, to 8,036.

The Nasdaq Composite Index slumped nearly four percent, to 1,232, with Intel leading losses in the tech-heavy index.

European markets closed lower, forced down by the weak earnings announcement by Intel.

London's FTSE 100 index was down nearly two per cent, at 4,057.

Frankfurt's DAX was down nearly one and a half per cent at 3,020.

In Paris, the CAC 40 index was down slightly at 3,067.

             



Chinese President Jiang Zemin says sustainable development is the shared responsibility of both developed and developing countries, and has called on them to make greater efforts to realize it.

Addressing the Second Assembly of the Global Environment Facility, or GEF, Jiang Zemin notes the Chinese government has always attached great importance to environmental protection and sustainable development. The country has also formulated a series of laws and regulations covering environmental and ecological protection.

Nearly 2,000 individuals including officials from GEF participating countries, the UN, and representatives of non-governmental organizations are expected to take part in the three-day event.
