Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao urges the UN to continue promoting progress in developing countries to bring about common development and to cope with the challenges of globalization.


During a meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Hu Jintao says that as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will always abide by and safeguard the goals and principles of the UN Charter. The country will also continue to support the work of the UN and strengthen cooperation with the inter-governmental organization.


Annan, who is in Beijing for a working visit, praised China’s role in international affairs and UN organizations, and saying that the UN will continue to work with China during its economic and social development.

Senior Chinese legislator Jiang Chunyun says the consolidation and development of friendly cooperation between China and the DPRK is the unswerving policy of the Chinese government.


The Vice-Chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee made this comment in Beijing while meeting with a visiting delegation led by Tyang Hyong Sop, vice-Chairman of the Korean Supreme People’s Conference Standing Committee.


Jiang Chunyun says that traditional friendship and friendly cooperation between the two countries conform to the fundamental interests and are deeply rooted in the hearts of both the peoples. These traditional friendship and cooperation were established and cultivated by past leaders of China and the DPRK. And China is willing to make joint efforts to enhance bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all fields and at all levels, in order to bring the friendship between the two countries to a higher level.


Tyang Hyong Sop spoke highly of the achievements China has made over the past 20 years and wishes the 16th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party a complete success. He says the traditional friendship between the two nations has been tested by history and will develop further. He says his country values its relations with China highly and is ready to do whatever it can to promote the development of bilateral cooperation.

China Construction Bank's Shanghai branch is to offer housing loans in US dollars to foreigners in Shanghai.


It is the first non-Reminbi housing loan in the local finance market.


The bank says up to 80 per cent of the property's value can be provided in the form of a mortgage. Loans can be paid off in a maximum of 25 years.


The bank's move aims at the foreign housebuyers in Shanghai who have been worrying about exchanging currencies. At the moment, they account for 5 per cent of local homebuyers.

A leading market research institute in Europe has declared China's Haier Corporation as the world's top refrigerator brand.


In its latest ratings, Euromonitor also rated Haier as the world's fifth largest producer of whiteware after Whirlpool, Electrolux, Bosch, Siemens and General Electric.


Haier ranked sixth in the same poll last year.


Euromonitor says the top five whiteware producers have been in existence for an average of 95 years, whereas Haier has existed for only 17 years.


Haier, based in the port city of Qingdao, in east China's Shandong Province, has maintained robust annual growth of nearly 80 percent over the past 17 years.


In recent years, it has set up factories in the United States and Pakistan. Sales of Haier's small refrigerator now have a 50 percent market share in the United States.

American International Group, or AIG, the world's leading international insurance and financial services company, is seeking cooperation with China Merchants Bank to increase policy sales in the country.


Shenzhen-based China Merchants says it will use its online banking network to promote policy sales for AIG across China. The two companies might also jointly offer credit cards to Chinese consumers.


AIG, which has a sales force of more than 12,000 agents in China and is currently launching four additional branches, says it expects insurance premium income in China to rise by a quarter this year.


AIG is planning to eventually offer mutual funds, pension funds, and several forms of consumer loans as it continues to expand here.

US stocks soared on Tuesday, boosted by surprisingly strong profits from bellwethers Citigroup Incorporated and General Motors Corporation. The gains put major indexes on track for the first four-day winning streak since August.


The Dow Jones industrial average shot up nearly five per cent to 8,255. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index added over five per cent to 1,282.


European shares posted heady gains, spurred by positive earnings reports and opening gains by US stocks.


London's FTSE-100 Share Index gained over five per cent to end at 4,130 while Paris's CAC-40 Index surged nearly 7 per cent to 3,086. In Frankfurt, the DAX Index rallied over six and a half per cent to end at 3,048, above the closely watched 3,000 level.

             



Chinese and Maldivian leaders have exchanged congratulatory messages on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In his message to Maldivian President, President Jiang Zemin says the past 30 years have witnessed the smooth development of bilateral ties and China will work together with the Maldives to further promote the traditional friendship.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan says almost all countries admire the growth rate of the Chinese economy.

While delivering a speech Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, Annan says that as the world economy slows down, only a few countries, including China, have continued to grow. He adds that China’s progress in reducing poverty is unprecedented in human’s history, and that the country is building a bridge to global trade and investment.

The "Science Popularization Train for West China" has kicked off in Beijing with the aim of promoting science education.

The 10 days of activity will spread science knowledge and promote the development of the western region, covering nine counties in the northwestern.

Experts in medicine, science, agriculture and education will work as volunteers on the train.

Science books and equipment will be donated to the western area to further extend the activity after the journey.

Those interested in cutting edge technology can visit four exhibitions held simultaneously at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.

Sponsored by the well-known German exhibition company, Hannover Fairs, the four exhibitions will cover the most advanced technologies in the fields of power transmission, automation, logistics, and environmental protection.

Companies from some 150 countries will be attending the exhibitions, each of which is expected to attracted some 30 thousand visitors.
