US West Coast dockworkers will return to work soon after a federal judge ordered the reopening of ports.
The 10-day labor dispute prompted US President George W. Bush to intervene.
On Bush's request, US District Judge William Alsup issued the order to reopen all ports along the west coast. The judge will hold a hearing next week on the 80-day cooling-off period mandated by the Taft-Hartley Act.
West coast ports were closed late last month amid a bitter contract dispute that centers on the implementation of waterfront technology. Unionized dock workers believe that the new technology will lead to job losses.
The ports dispute has dealt a huge blow to a US economy still struggling with recession. Around 300 billion US dollars worth of goods pass through the ports each year, mainly heading for and arriving from ports in the Asia-Pacific region such as Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The group has listed Indonesia, India, Brazil and China as home to the most threatened mammals and birds, saying the Iberian lynx will likely become the first wild cat species to die out since records began being kept on endangered species.
It's also drawn attention to the rapid decline in the number of plant species in South and Central America, Central and West Africa, and Southeast Asia.
