Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji has called on governments in Asia and the European Union or EU to expand their economic and political cooperation in order to ensure stability and economic development in the two regions.

The Premier made the appeal in a speech delivered at the fourth Asia Europe Meeting or ASEM summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, where high level officials from 10 Asian nations and the European Union's 15 member countries have gathered for two days of meetings which conclude Tuesday(today).

The Premier's speech emphasized free trade, increased cooperation among small and medium-sized enterprises in the two regions and strengthened high-tech cooperation.

For the sake of sustainable development, the Chinese Premier said that all governments in Asia and Europe should enhance their cooperation on environmental protection and agriculture.

On the diplomatic front, Zhu Rongji called for strengthening the role of the UN in the anti-terrorism war.

He also stressed the need to promote exchanges between Asia and Europe, a move that he says would help the two civilizations to raze barriers, achieve mutual understanding, and defuse conflicts.

As Israel's siege of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat’s Ramallah compound enters its fourth day, the international community is calling on Israel to withdraw its forces.

An official statement by the White House characterized the Israeli action as counter-productive, and says it will neither contribute to reducing terrorist attacks nor lead to Palestinian reforms.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair, meanwhile, has joined the government of Greece in calling on Israel to end the state of seige.

Israel's Defense Ministry responded by offering Arafat a one-way ticket if he is willing to leave Palestine.

China says it is very concerned and worried about rising tensions between Palestine and Israel.

China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue says China strongly condemns both the suicide bombing occurred in Israel and the massive incursion into Palestine by Israeli forces. Israel has laid siege to President Yasser Arafat’s official residence and headquarters in Ramallah.

She says China has noted Arafat's statement demanding all Palestinian military factions stop violent activities. And she adds that the international community has asked Israel to stop laying siege to and destroying Arafat’s residence.

The spokeswoman urges Israel to respond positively to world opinion, stop its military action against Palestinians, lift the siege and ensure the safety of Arafat. This will allow the two sides to resume talks with each other.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said that Iraq must abide by all United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Speaking at a press conference, Annan said the council "is free to pass any resolution".

Asked whether Baghdad has communicated any change in its policy on weapons inspections, the secretary-general said the only communication he had received was last week's letter which he forwarded to the council.

Iraq sent a letter to Annan last Monday indicating that Baghdad is ready to readmit UN inspectors unconditionally.

Annan noted the council is in the process of discussing a proposed new resolution, which, if passed, would guide the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission and would require Iraq's compliance.

China has become the most attractive nation for foreign direct investment or FDI, surpassing the United States for the first time.

World-renowned consulting company, A.T. Kearney, says that its most recent FDI Confidence Index, the company's barometer of future foreign direct investment flows, shows that while most nations' power to attract investment is in decline, China's continues to grow.

Kearney says several factors are contributing to China's number one foreign direct investment status, including its populous market, continued economic growth as a member of the WTO and future host of the Olympics, and stable political climate. #

An official with the global management consultant firm adds that by 2005, half of all new 10,000-US dollar annual salary earners in the world will be Chinese, noting that strong buying power is another factor for the country's FDI inflow.

A.T. Kearney also says that China is not only a recipient of FDI, but an investor, with the top 12 Chinese state-owned enterprises pouring some 30 billion dollars into foreign economies in 2001, an amount equivalent to the entire investment made by Latin America.

An International Machinery and Electric Product Fair has opened in Wuhan, the capital of central China’s Hubei Province.

More than 400 domestic and foreign enterprises exhibited their products at the annual Wuhan fair.

Machinery and electric products are China's largest export sector. In the first eight months of this year, the export volume of machinery and electric products topped 95 billion US dollars, up 27 per cent compared to the same period last year.

A series of trade talks and purchase activities will also be conducted during the event.

Wuhan, the largest comprehensive industrial base in central China, has developed machinery as one of its four pillars of industry in recent years.

As the only state-level event of its kind, the fair will be hosted in the city every year.

A slew of dour corporate forecasts and fears about a possible war with Iraq sent US stocks tumbling on Monday, yanking the Nasdaq down to its lowest level since 1996 and extending the longest bear market stocks have seen in 60 years.

The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 36 points, or nearly 3 percent to close below 1,200 for the first time since September 1996 at 1,185 while the Dow Jones industrial average fell 114 points, or 1.4 percent, to 7,872.

Microsoft Corp. was among the Dow's biggest percentage decliners, falling 2.23 dollars, or 4.7 percent to 45 dollars.

European major stock markets ended sharply lower Monday as investors sentiment, undermined by the ongoing threat of war with Iraq, was hit by negative news from the US Conference Board announcing that economic recovery was fragile.

British shares closed at a new six-year low. The FTSE 100 index finished at 3,739 points, down 121 points or 3.3 percent on the day.

German blue-chip DAX was trading 151 or 5 percent lower at 2,914 points.

The French CAC-40 finished 97 points or 3 percent lower at 2,794 points, its lowest closing level since November 1997.

Qinghai Province has succeeded in using artificial rain to widen the upper reaches of the Yellow River.

Over six billion cubic meters of artificial rain added during the past five years has made the slim river wider than before.

The Yellow River, the second longest in China, originates in Qinghai Province. Sustained drought has caused a sharp decrease in water flow on its upper reaches since 1990.
