Breaking tradition CHINESE artist Ding
Sizhong's watercolour and ink paintings are far removed from
traditional Chinese painting, though its influence is clear.
in fact,Chinese people recognise Western elements in his
work, while Westerners discern something Chinese. One of
his admirers Dr Yang Chongguang, said:"It seems Oriental art
and Western art are analogous in their simplicity.
Sizhong's waterscapes and landscapes are painted in an
abstract style, loose washes of colour make up these surfaces
on Chinese rice paper. They are incredibly peaceful, they
relate to Sizhong's meditative relationship with nature.
In the Lotus Series, sweeping blues and greens part to
reveal the barest glimpse of a lotus flower,in the way ice on
a lake cracks to reveal the water beneath or clouds part to
reveal shafts of light. The pictures are about light as
much as anything else and as the light peers through the
colours that overlay each other,a luminous quality pervades
the landscape. In others, lines like twigs reach across
the paper and a pattern is formed between line and colour as
the two merge together. The art of watercolour painting
and what it can create is as prominent here as the natural
subjects the painting are inspired by. With their
enchanting atmosphere, these images seem as though they should
be the backdrop to mythological stories. Indeed, some of
them were painted in the village where the beginning sequence
of Crouching Tiger ,Hidden Draggon, was filmed,Huiszhou, where
Sizhong travels once a year to paint. In these
paintings, the doors of white houses are behind streaks of
black paint in what appears to be a dark night. Sizhong
sketches outside then returns to his studio to paint his final
vision .Though modern in the free handling of paint.there is
definitely something timeless about Sizhong's
work, perhaps because of his subject matter. In the only
oil painting in the exhibition.the Jiuhuashan mountains, which
Buddhists climb to workship at the peak, are evoked in
exuberant.bright colour.Sizhong himself is not Buddhists but
is fascinated by the belief. It seems appropriate for Sizhong's
to exhibit in Britain. As Dr Yang Chongguang says:His
early paintings display laborious explorations, changes and
evolvements-and also his experimental endeavours in techniques
and styles. I some of his water and sea pieces ,it is quickly
seen he has grasped the artistry of the two British
watercolourist masters, Constable and Turner. Born in
Suzhou,Anhui in 1963,Sizhong graduated from Anui Art School. He
has since had exhibitions in China,Bulgaria,America and
Singapore. He says when he goes back to China he will paint
scenes inspired by Brighton. | |
