Temple fairs are an important part of Spring Festival celebrations in China. More than just markets, they offer food, handicrafts, and performances. And they are a popular family destination during the holiday.

The Ditan temple fair is one of the biggest in Beijing, bringing in almost a million visitors over five days.

These are among the wonders awaiting nine-year-old Ellen, who was born in the U.S. and is now visiting her grandparents in Beijing with her parents. This is her first experience of a temple fair.

"It's really cool. They spent a lot of time in them. It's very detailed and very pretty," said Ellen Liu, U.S. visitor.

"I told her that every year we worship the Rabbit Lord, who will bless us. I'm going to take her to see clay sculptures and paper-cutting, as she won't be able to see these in the U.S.," visitor Zhu Minhui said.

It's not just handicrafts and food on offer; visitors can also get a lesson in history through demonstrations at the fair. At this very venue, Chinese emperors prayed to the God of Earth hundreds of years ago.

As this is the Year of the Monkey, it's the star in this temple fair. There are all kinds of monkey products here, like monkey Chinese shadow puppets, monkey paper-cuttings, and this stuffed monkey dressed in traditional fabrics.

All these monkey products have brought in brisk business for the vendors.

"There are always customers from morning to evening, non-stop. It keeps us very busy. The stuffed monkeys are especially popular," said Qu Peipei, seller.

This little visitor also comes from the U.S., but is now on vacation in Beijing. She got a special Lunar New Year present from her mother.

"I watched the TV series 'Journey to the West' when I was growing up, so the stuffed monkeys reminded me of my childhood, and I'm emotionally attached to them. Also, when my daughter grows up, the monkey will remind her that she has visited China in the Year of the Monkey," said Kan Ke, visitor.

Ditan temple fair is one of the biggest in Beijing. The five-day event, which runs through Friday, sees nearly 200,000 people a day.
