1. Rationale and Significance of the Proposed Study
Bingxin is the first authoress at Chinese modern times and one of the pioneers of new literature movement. She is not only an outstanding litterateur, writer and poet, but also a translator with prolific works. While current researches mostly focus on her writings, translation works and the thoughts or motivation of translation, few researches are combined Bingxin’s writings and her translation work together. This dissertation will discuss how intertextual elements, such as cultural and historical background, ideology, living environment and translator’s literary taste in translators’ literary writings and their translation works, all of which are embodied in writing works and translation works and also discuss the relation between Bingxin’s literary writings and her translation works.
2. Literature Review
During Late Qing Dynasty to May Fourth Movement when translated literature were flourished, enlightened by the New Culture Movement, writers devoted themselves to introducing foreign literary works into China, such as Luxun, Maodun, Guo Moruo and Bajin etc. They utilized some foreign writing skills to improve their literary works. The achievement in translation, though as important as their creative writings, used to be ignored until recently.
Their translation activities and views on translation were introduced in books about history of translation. Intertextuality Perspective on Translation Research，written by Tai(2006) introduced the use of intertextuality on translation in six aspects: they are literature explanation, multiple subjective interactions, the elements of intertextuality on translation: language, icons, culture and literary interaction, re-exploring the function of social history relation and returning text. While according to Chen (1989), the book Draft of History of Translated Literature in China mentioned roughly that foreign literature ideological trend, especially realistic literature, infused new literature ideology and new notion into new literature and that foreign literature gave examples to and enlightened new literature writers. Besides these two functions, this book didn’t analyze the detailed relation of literature and translation works.
Even though there are a lot of literature researches on Bingxin’s translation works, most of those focus on the translation characteristics, translation thoughts writing styles and feminist translation. For example, the Master dissertation from Hunan University of Technology, written by Liang Weili(2012), On Bingxin’s Chinese Translation of Gitanjali from the Perspective of Translational Aesthetics researched the aesthetics of Bingxin’s translation works and concluded that the thoughts of Bingxin’s resonated with Tagores’. And it was the reason why Bingxin chose Tagore’s work to translate. To some extent, it can be called intertextuality. Readers could perceive some influence from Tagore on Bingxin’s creative writings.
Shao’s study (2012) The communication between Bingxin’s translation thought and creative literature thought, published in Journal of Changchun University of Science and Technology, discussed the relation between Bingxin’s creative writings and translation works by researching the communication of these two thoughts. While the communication of thoughts is one of aspects of intertextuality, this thesis still doesn’t study the relations completely.
Yin’s Study on Translation and Writings from Intertextuality Perspective (2005), published in Guangxi Social Sciences had pointed out that the intertextual relation between translation and writings was influenced by each other. The influence from creative writings on translation meant that readers always had some intertextual association when they found there were some similar phrases or words structurally or literarily or in style. Translators used those similar phrase or words unconsciously or for some purposes. While the influences from translation on writings could be divided into two aspects, the first one was that some creative writings themselves came from translation; the other one was that the life of origin works was lasted by translation works. This thesis just discussed roughly the intertextual relation between translation works and creative writings.
The Chen’s Master dissertation (2009) from Guangdong University of Foreign Study, Echoing of Translators’ Literary Writings in Their Translation Works—A Study of Bingxin’s Translation, discussed the echoing of Bingxin’s writings on her translation works in three aspects, history background, ideology and living environment. This Master dissertation showed detailedly the reflection of literary writings on translation works while this dissertation just researched the single direction of the relation between writings and translation works. As the Draft of History of Translated Literature in China, which is mentioned above, says, foreign literary ideology infused new thought and notion and gave examples and enlightened literary writers. So Bingxin’s translation works also influence her creative works.
Summary: Although there are a lot of studies about Bingxin’s works, few of them focus on studying the relation between creative writings and translation works. Most of literature researches on Bingxin’s translation works paid more attention to the characteristics or thoughts of translation works. Even though referring to the relation of translation works and writings, those theses just mentioned that roughly. While the more comprehensive study, Echoing of Translators’ Literary Writings in Their Translation Works—A Study of Bingxin’s Translation, only researched the relation in single direction. So it will be thoroughly explored in the dissertation that the relation in the other direction, and make some complement in three aspects which are mentioned in Chen’s Master dissertation.
