Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,
The other day I had a call with a friend who went to study in the US. She told me excitedly, “Everything here is tagged Made in China. But I sensed some disappointment in her voice. I haven’t found any Chinese brand so far. It seems that China only produces other people’s stuff. Her words were thought provoking. China, as the world’s factory, performs only the manufacturing segment for foreign brands. “Made in China” has even become a symbol of cheap products. It’s been said that China has to export 800 million shirts to get an airplane. What we are missing is sustainable competence that comes from trademarks, patents and designs. China can only gain a cutting edge in the global arena, of our enterprises move up
the value chain and create products of their own. This transformation will be no lelike a marathon. Luckily, some Chinese enterprises are already in busineor the long run. They point the way for other enterprises with three strategies:
brand identity, innovation of technology and modern management systems. The first strategy was to establish brand identity, which is a company’s personality. The Lenovo
Group, the third largest PC maker in the world, was originally known as the Legend Group. When it entered the global market, it found the name Legend was too ordinary and frequently used. The company knew how important it was to establish a brand that would make it stand out. Thus it changed its name into Lenovo, taking what means new in Latin-novo. Now this unique brand is widely recognized around the globe. What follows is the innovation of technology. It can free Chinese enterprises from their dependency on foreign technology and increase added value of their products. Haier, the third largest, largest household appliances maker in the world owes its succeto constant innovation. Over the last 16 years, Haier has invested over 7 billion RMB in technological development. Up till now, Haier still meets its goal by creation over one new product a day, maintaining its upper-hand in the global competition. The fundamental strategy is to establish mechanisms that ensure a smooth transition. Nowadays, modern management system have produced overwhelming advantage. They can ensure efficient division of labor and vitality in the businecycle. The New Hope Group, an originally family-owned business, found itself trapped by the limitation and inefficiency of being run by
family members together. After the enterprise turned itself into a limited liability company that distributed shares efficiently, its businestarted to flourish and became the national leading enterprise for agriculture. China’s growth will
not stop merely at manufacturing. With brand identity, innovation of technology and modern management systems, Chinese enterprises will stand strong in the global competition. I believe that one day, my friend in the US together with all the Chinese people around the world, will proudly find abundant products tagged “Created in China” in the global
market.

Music, a word that has changed the world
In our daily life, we use language to communicate with others, without it we can’t survive in society. There’re different kinds of languages all over the world, and they all have their own characteristics, to say which is the best is really difficult and subjective. But when asking about my opinion, I, without any doubt, will tell you that music is the most marvelous language that has changed the world.
As we all know, music is a universal language thus we, although may differ from each other in either belief or colors of skin, still are able to understand others’ feelings through music. Because music played by varies kinds of instruments is not only able to exprea multiple amount of emotions which all human beings possess, but it can also pacify our hearts, giving us a tender comfort whenever we are at the cutting edge of life. Setting aside the grand swell a symphony or a concerto can spur in our hearts, just a delicate quiver of a thread of a cello or a piano is touching enough to soften our every sensory nerve. So concerning that much sentiment music can express, I believe it is music that has gathered different parts of the world together, spanning both time and space gaps.
Furthermore, people nowadays don’t just use music simply for regulating the atmosphere or something like that. In psychology especially psychophysiology, music has been explored quite a lot for its effects on human’s brain, either for treatment or training skills.
To sum up, I don’t think it’s improper to exaggerate a bit that life without music is just like a fish living without water. Indeed, with respect to all the colorful feelings music brings as well as the instrumental influence that music exerts on us, music, is THE word that has changed the world.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlenmen,thank you for your patience.
Today I would like to begin with my personal experience.Before getting enrolled in college,I had been bombarded with suggestions.＂Take courses of different subjects.Broaden your horizon.My high school teacher advised.＂Give into campus activities.Have fun!＂a friend said.She was well seasoned in Student Union affairs.＂Work hard.Get as many As as possible.Make your transcript look good!＂my cousin offered.By the way,she was a senior busy hunting for a job.As for my mom ,she simply said,＂Take care, Don’t be too hard on yourself.＂
Composed but hopeful,I eagerly set out for an exciting life at college.Yet very soon,as I pondered these golden rules,I was overwhelmed and bewildered.Such advice all made perfect sense.Yet I couldn’t figure out what should top my priority list.My first semester at college was stimulating in a somewhat anarchic way.I rushed from library to club,from classroom to tennis court,＂enjoying＂,as it were,the freshneof being a freshman at the expense of my sleep.Little by little,however,I became overtaxed and eventually fell victim to the＂Yu Men＂syndrome.＂Yu Men＂being stressful misery.
Literally,I was overwrought from the pressures of work and life at college.I wanted to experience and excel.I wanted everything.Emotionally,I was like an insatiable kid,whose hand had got stuck in the candy jar with way too many sweets.Luckily I didn’t suffer for too long from my ＂get-everything＂malaise.
Recently,Mr.Tom Freston,president of the media company MTV came to my school.His talk inspired me,He proudly told us that the average age of his employees is only 28.What’s the secret behind the succeof his young team?＂Sagacity.＂he told us＂In other words,being conscious of what one is doing and what one is able to do.＂
Exactly!As a freshman about to be a sophomore.I realize now that our time and stamina don’t allow us to extend ourselves in all directions.So the moral responsibility of college education is to teach students the art of making important choices.No matter how hard the growing pains are,mastering this art is at the heart of every undergraduate’s success,whether in school now or in life later on.So I am learning to make such choices.
Joining this competition,for instance,has been one.I’ve wanted to fully experience this contest,to make friends,to discover what my age peers believe and to stretch myself in new and unexpected ways .I imagine this is ture for most contestants here todoy.But to
do so,we’ve chosen to set aside pleasures,such as watching TV series＂Friends＂and karaoke evenings,so we could invest more time in more reading,speaking,and study.Yet this competition,by forceing us to take charge of our decisions,has surely helped us define our values,find out what were capable of doing,and learn what best suits our individual development.
I believe this knowledge of one’s own caliber is the most valuavle,integral and longest lasting lesson for students in this increasingly competitive world.As for the challenges and opportunities for us,they will be determined by how adequately our education trains us to gain a clear perception of ourselves,and thereby to make sensible choices that follow.
College education,as British philosopher Alfred North whitehead said,＂should be energizing as the poet of our dreams and the architect of our purposes＂．Such purpose,self discipline and vision all hinge on the art of choice-making.
As I look back on the advice received those very first days on campus.I no longer feel perplexed because I now have my own guideline.Make chooses that lead to a clearer vision of who I am,what I can do,and how I may best tap my potential.The horizon is now wide but distinct.And the taste already feels sweet.
